Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - dmacfour - 12-09-2015 04:13 PM It's those filthy millennials. Quote:The people responsible for this shift are the young. According to a recent Pew Research Center report, 73 percent of American adults younger than 30 expressed some sort of belief in evolution, a jump from 61 percent in 2009, the first year in which the question was asked. The number who believed in purely secular evolution (that is, not directed by any divine power) jumped from 40 percent to a majority of 51 percent. In other words, if you ask a younger American how humans arose, you’re likely to get an answer that has nothing to do with God. Quote:It’s not just the young who are moving in favor of secular evolution. The overall proportion of Americans who believe in secular evolution has doubled since 1999, from 9 percent to 19 percent, according to a 2014 Gallup poll. But it’s important to note that the jump in secular evolution does not necessarily correspond to an increase in the total number who believe in evolution. Instead, most of that increase has been drawn from the pool of Americans who previously reported that they believed in evolution guided by God, which simultaneously dropped from 40 percent to 31 percent. Quote:The fight matters because we’re talking about the most fundamental tenet of modern biology. Origin of Species was just voted the most influential academic book of all time. As biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky wrote in 1973: “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” Shared ancestry and adaptation by natural selection are what tie the biological sciences together, give them shape and meaning, and explain why life on Earth became the way it is. Trying to teach biology without evolution would be like trying to teach chemistry without the periodic table of elements: It just doesn’t work. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2015/11/polls_americans_believe_in_evolution_less_in_creationism.html RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - HarmonOliphantOberlanderDevine - 12-09-2015 04:22 PM I can imagine it stems from how it is taught in schools. I know my Catholic taught evolution. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - EverRespect - 12-09-2015 04:24 PM Those under 30 are the smartest and most experienced people in the country. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - DogPoundNorth - 12-09-2015 04:28 PM There is a debate about this? RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - 200yrs2late - 12-09-2015 04:37 PM Neither evolution nor creationism are mutually exclusive. I certainly know that animals and plants both evolve, but that doesn't mean that modern man, Homo Sapiens, were not created in God's image. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - DogPoundNorth - 12-09-2015 04:44 PM I'm sure a lot of it may have to do with what is going on over at "[split] Something something no true Pope....." lol. Religion makes people fight, not the other way around. Maybe people would rather believe that it all happened by accident, thus not having to worry about which God is correct. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - EverRespect - 12-09-2015 04:45 PM Depends on how you define "smart". You probably define it as someone who is good at academic tests. I define it as someone who can support a family. How would I know the answer to that? Scientific proof is also tough to go against. You'll have to ask them. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - miko33 - 12-09-2015 04:58 PM Great news. Hopefully soon people will no longer put any thought into the notion of Intelligent Design and trying to push it into our schools. It hasn't, but it certainly has proved evolution takes place. RE: Evolution Is Finally Winning Out Over Creationism - HeartOfDixie - 12-09-2015 05:04 PM Catholicism, unlike Protestantism as whole, is very pro-science. In fact, you wouldn't be wrong to call it the single greatest contributor to scientific knowledge. The Catholic Church today spends a lot on research and supports several cutting edge projects. The meme of the anti-science religious zealot is inappropriately laid on Catholics, even though they are one of the favorite targets of the idiotic wing of atheism. "proven" is a bad word to use. The nature of hypothesis testing makes proving anything impossible. Shown or demonstrated are usually better choices. |
