Looks good - 6'7" SG/SF - it sound like Duling's been playing PF too. he'd have to put on some muscle for college. As a sophomore, he was starting for a very good New Albany team -> http://www.thisweeknews.com/content/stories/newalbany/sports/2015/02/16/new-albany-roundup-boys-bench-players-showing-progress.html

It looks like we have the 2016 class filled - 10 guys scheduled to return, with 3 verbal commits, plus Devon Andrews who's reported to be enrolled at Kent. Of course there's always turnover.

Any idea why the change from new Albany to Newark? I know changing schools is common place but still IMO a potential concern.

He is really impressive for a sophomore. Ought to be a treat to watch him develop this year and next. Incredible college upside. Does a whole to of things well. Inside-outside-run the floor: welcome to the Flash family, B.J.!

Probably one of the better looking HS recruits we've ever had. Sendy has been doing a nice job of getting early commitments. Now we play the waiting game to see if his name ever gets on that LOI next fall.

Hustlebelt's take: http://www.hustlebelt.com/mac-basketball-recruiting/2015/11/2/9648448/2017-mac-mens-basketball-recruiting-kent-state-lands-small-forward

One funny line in the article..."This is a major get for Kent State as they try to build a fence around the Ohio state border." - so there's 10+ Division I college basketball teams in Ohio, and we're the ones that have to keep the out-of-state recruiters away from the Ohio kids?

Welcome Mr. Duling is right. Great to see KSU getting Ohio kids onto the roster, with the recent transfers to KSU and the kid next year from Walsh and now Duling.

I keep an eye on verbalcommits.com for Kent State, and for a long time, they've had all Kent State guys as '2 star' recruits. Everyone currently on they team, they've been a '2 star'. I think '2 star' is their minimum, because I haven't seen anyone lower than that. Everyone from Jimmy Hall to Jon Fleming was a 2 star.

Comparing that to Acorn, Reggie McAdams and Josh Williams were 3 stars, Forsythe was 2.7, Robotham was 2.3, everyone else was 2.

But - just recently - I see that Yavari Hall and BJ Duling are both now listed as '3 star' on verbalcommits.com. I don't know how they could have moved up over the off-season, but it's a positive. We just need to get them signed.

Guys have great summers in AAU ball and get their rating adjusted all the time.

Is Yavari Hall still coming? He didn't actually sign an LOI, right?

No LOI in November, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer still refers to him as a "Kent State commit"

See - the article about the November 30th Cleveland Central Catholic - Warrensville Heights game - http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/news/article/-5343123753077348982/no-6-cleveland-central-catholic-basketball-escapes-press-from-no-9-warrensville-70-64-photos-video/

"The biggest returning piece from that team (Cleveland Central Catholic) is 6-foot-8 senior Tervell Beck, who scored 20 points with Kent State assistant coach DeAndre Haynes watching from the stands.

Haynes came to catch a glimpse of the versatile Beck and check on commit Yavari Hall of Warrensville Heights. Hall scored 20 points before fouling out in the final 90 seconds, just as the Tigers (1-1) ran out of steam."

Is Duling still verbally committed to KSU?

RE: Major Recruiting Win - 2017 - GoFlashes7 - 07-11-2016 12:09 AM

Here are some updates from http://www.verbalcommits.com :

7/10/2016 - 2018 PG Brandon Wade (6-0, 160, 2★) has received an offer from Kent State
7/10/2016 - 2018 SG Jimmy Beane (6-3, -, 2★) has received an offer from Kent State
7/7/2016 - 2018 SG Lacey Watson (6-3, -, 2★) has received an offer from Kent State

Here's the link to Kent State's http://www.verbalcommits.com page: http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/kent-state

Deon Edwin & Jimmy Hall are the only (2) seniors on this year's roster.

RE: Major Recruiting Win - 2017 - GoFlashes7 - 01-15-2017 05:28 PM

Here are some offer updates from http://www.verbalcommits.com.

KSU new offers for 2017 recruiting class in the last 90 days:
David Collins, G, First Love Christian HS (PA)
Michael Miller, G, Shawnee CC (IL)
Akiean Frederick, F, Sinclair CC (OH)
Teyvion Kirk, G, Joliet West HS (IL)

KSU new offers for 2018 recruiting class:
Gabe Brown, F, Belleville HS (MI)
DeAndre Gholston, G, 21st Century Charter (IN)

Not sure how many signees will be in the 2017 class, at least 3 I would guess with Hall/Edwin running out of eligibility and DeBerry transferring out, unless Ridenour got DeBerry's scholarship? Not sure if Hurley or Edwards will return next year being buried on the bench, but what do I know? BJ Duling is only commit for 2017 class, right?

RE: Major Recruiting Win - 2017 - anti-zip - 01-15-2017 05:51 PM

Yes, Duling is the only commit for 2017 so far. I saw they offered Miller and Frederick very recently. That's a JUCO PG and PF both of which are putting up really good numbers this year. So that tells me, based on how the season is going and what we're losing, the coaches think we need a both PG and a PF that can be more than a role player next year. Which I agree with.

I don't like to speculate on who may or may not leave, but I wouldn't be surprised if we ended with at least 2 or 3 more 2017 recruits.

Side note, I saw Tervell Beck from Cleveland Central Catholic is playing at a prep school right now. I know he was at some games last year. I wonder if we're still after him. I think he wanted to play for a bigger school so I'm guessing he's a long shot at best.

BJ Duling - Player of the Year for Ohio Capital Conference-Capital Division. Newark won their first round game in the OHSAA tournament 84-38 over Whetstone

Not sure where to post this, but Canton McKinley's Darryl Straughter, who has been mentioned before in this bbs, has committed to D II Walsh University. I'm not sure if Kent State was ever interested, but he could have been a decent player and scoring threat for KSU. In D II he could be a standout.
