Renee Bemis is 99% finished with the model and will be sending it to the foundry for casting very soon. Incredible work by a great sculptor!

How awesome is that... where will this be placed? I'm sure this was covered plenty of times but it be nice to take the place of the pig-dog. Assume it would be set up for field entry?

NIU originally planned to place the sculpture outside the main entrance of the East Grandstand. However, they decided against it due to the expansion of the East side envisioned under the Master Facilities Plan. They subsequently decided to place it between the north end of the West Grandstand and the Yordon Center.

Depending on whether the MFP is still being considered, it's possible the location could change again. It's important to note that the sculpture will be mounted on a pedestal that is moveable, using a forklift. NIU wants to be able to move the sculpture for display at special events.

There's no doubt in our minds that, wherever it's placed, the sculpture will be a source of immense pride for NIU. We also think that "high-fiving" Diesel will become part of the gameday experience for NIU fans!

I can't comment on the sculpture replacing PigDog. LOL

Not a bad placement at all, and If Diesel replaces pig dog, I will be even more happy that my money went to a good place.

Current update as of 4/8/17

The clay model of Diesel is currently at the foundry where they have begun the 1st steps of the casting process - making the mold. This required a payment to the foundry of $5,000 to get started.

We have heard from Renee that she will be taking pictures that we can share within the next week or so.

We have had over $10,000 donated although the GoFundMe total shows slightly less. The First National Bank of DeKalb (where the Diesel Memorial Project has a bank account) direct deposited $500 into the DMP account. That donation amount does not show up on the GoFundMe total.

Thanks - everyone - for your support of this great project. Please continue to share the information & tell people about the project & tell people that donations are still being accepted! I plan to have my company donate again in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait to see this sculpture! :-)

This looks great and can't wait to see it. At least the school has one positive thing going for it.

Thanks - and since fundraising is ongoing, please tell others about the project! Many fans working together can get the project done. :-)

Does Fatty's know about this? Would they chip in? Or any additional local businesses? I see a couple have donated. I've chipped in about as much as I can but we seem to be many thousands short still so we need to somehow find more willing donors.

Yes, We have given an information packet to Fatty's and hope to receive a donation from them. We'll see.
If you have an other business suggestions or fund raising ideas please post on here. Fresh ideas are welcome.

We are a legal corporate not for profit registered with the state & Federal gov. We have our corporate bank account at the First National Bank of DeKalb. Our legal advisor, Rick Radek, tells me that anyone can go to the bank & give a donation. Just tell them it is for the Diesel Memorial Project. Our legal advisor is pro bono. ALL of us are donating our time & efforts so all money raised goes to the project.

Something else we would like people to know is that this is called the Diesel Memorial for fundraising purposes but in reality it is to be a memorial to ALL Huskie live mascots . There will be a plaque listing names & years of service. When Mission retires, his name will also be on the plaque.

Huge thanks to all who have donated. We still need donations so please tell your NIU friends. Thanks everyone!

Have you tried to engage the GREEK community, perhaps have a contest to see which fraternity or sorority can raise the most money for the project with some nice prize for the winner? Perhaps Huskie Athletics would fund the prize?

You might be way ahead of me on this and probably are.

So sad how much effort this is taking to get the money. This is why our alumni base is really behind and not good. We need to change the culture of our alumni. Who knows how though.
