Memorial for Diesel - NIUDrew - 09-15-2015 11:44 PM

I was really sad to hear the news about Diesel. He brought a lot of joy to fans at the stadium and watching on TV. It seems like every game broadcast, both local and national, the crew commented on the beautiful dog named Diesel. He was there for almost all of NIU’s rise to prominence as a mid-major power, and absolutely deserves a spot in the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame. He was the one constant during those years which saw various coaches, athletic directors, and players cycle through the program. He even provided the most shared NIU sports moment in history with his signature high five.

Some have mentioned a statue. I don’t know the feasibility in terms of donors, but I would love to see a statue of Diesel in front of the West side where everyone walks by -- one that is low to the ground in his signature high five pose. Kids would be high-fiving him back and having photo opportunities every Saturday for years.

We will miss you, buddy. I hope you are rollin in the snow somewhere on the other side.

The realist in my says someone really needs to check with NIU athletics before any donations are excepted.

i'm in and think this is a fantastic idea and tradition as long as sh*t doesn't get weird like Texas A&M:

... yes that is a cemetery for their mascots... yes they have their own little score board.

"The dog cemetery once had a view of Kyle Field's scoreboard, but renovations and moving of the grave sites blocked the view and a miniature scoreboard had to be installed at the new location. ... All the dogs are buried with their heads and paws pointed towards the stadium, so that in death “they can always watch the Aggies outscore their opponent on the field”"

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/reveille-mascot-cemetery

Because there is honoring a good dog and excellent mascot and then there's Texas, who always has to out do everyone.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - niuguy - 09-16-2015 11:15 AM

A statue of Diesel giving the high five where you or your kids could high five him back for a sweet photo? I got money for that.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - NIUHuskie4life - 09-16-2015 11:19 AM

Count me in. I wonder if this is something our AD would sanction and perhaps help gain some traction though public donation. May be worth an email...

Definitely. I would hope NIU would welcome this and support it in every way.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - sarasotahuskie - 09-16-2015 11:49 AM

I'm in, the high five pose is a great idea.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - BleedsHuskieRed - 09-16-2015 11:58 AM

I'm in for $50 if we get approval from NIU on the condition that it looks like Diesel (no PigDiesel) and that he has a smile on his face and the high five going.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - Field Turf - 09-16-2015 12:07 PM

If athletics knew donations would be greater than the cost of the statue, they'd be all for this idea.

RE: Memorial for Diesel - HuskiePride12 - 09-16-2015 12:14 PM

Any idea of what the Pig Dog cost? 2K? I'd be in for $50.00 at-least, if not $100.00
