Old Dominion women's basketball - C2__ - 04-28-2015 03:53 PM

What happened? They used to be a dominant force in women's basketball?

Short answer. The P5 programs figured out that it was worth their while to pursue WBB.

Wendy Larry lost control of the program and resigned when her contract wasn't renewed. We then hired Karen Barefoot.

Nuff Said.

No, its not enough said, I don't follow women's b-ball anymore. Anyways, I just remember them dominating the CAA every year and being another LA Tech or Tennessee (UConn was just emerging while ODU was good).

Bad hire. Year 5 will tell us the overall health of the program.

^^^^^ Ding ding ding.... Other than uconn you wont see a nationally strong program outside the p5. The womens game is more wwe pre-determined that the men.

You might as well put UConn a special category, like BYU football. And unlike BYU, UConn was a major for decades.

For a time we enjoyed great success with international recruiting that helped keep us just ahead of the curve. That has dried up plus the factors already discussed.

Oh well, I guess there's a new dominion in college basketball. Get it? Old Dominion--new dominion?

in Tech's case they let Kim Mulkey leave for Baylor when she really wanted to coach the Techsters

Wendy had an assistant that spoke like 5-6 languages and seemed to get every good foreign recruit. When that assistant left the program suffered. As another poster noted the "big" schools started putting the focus on WBB (Title 1X, not out of the goodness of their hearts). ODU, Immaculata, LaTech, Tenn were the few schools that invested in WBB prior to Tittle 1X. ODU had an AD that was the biggest advocate for women's sports....some may say to the detriment of men's sports. He was the one who thwarted a few attempts to revive football during the 70-90's. Wendy sort of lost her mojo for coaching her last few years. So, that is the domino effect. I think we can be a good WBB program again. Only time will tell if that will be under our current coach's tenure.

Looks like we got ourselves a new WBB coach;

RE: Old Dominion women's basketball - WKUFan518 - 05-23-2017 12:55 PM

Former assistant at WKU, of course she been at a lot of places...

RE: Old Dominion women's basketball - ODU Oldtimer - 05-23-2017 12:57 PM

Nikki McCray-Penson has the pedigree that ODU should be very proud to have as a leader of the program. She comes from an era when Tennessee and ODU were opponents and had great respect for each other on and off the court. I feel like Wood Selig knocked this one out of the park. I understand that the fans will need to be patient for the immediate future. Especially with all the transfers and the programs sudden head coaching change. I think this hire will be great for the players and I, like everyone at ODU look forward to a return of good competitive basketball at Old Dominion.

Good Luck Coach McCray-Penson we will be rooting you and the women on to great things in the future.

2015 was clearly not a banner year for me

RE: Old Dominion women's basketball - 12thmonarch - 05-24-2017 06:26 PM

Its official. Nikki McCray Penson is the new Head Coach for Lady Monarchs Basketball. I think this is a very good hire. Go Monarchs and Lady Monarchs.
