Very cool...

R.I.P. Burly Earl...

Man the Burly Earl was awesome.. Why did that place close down?

RE: Thoughts on Blazer Football .... from 1982 - 58-56 - 04-16-2015 09:26 AM

It was still "Burly Earl's" in those days and was a biker hangout. Led by this incredibly scary-looking dude (who was actually a nice guy) named Mother who must have been at least 6-6 350.

I thought the same thing. I remember when it closed, took away a great place with good Blazer memories. Anyone know why it shut down?

Interesting article on Beauregard T. Rooster and the transition from Frank Sutherland to a student in the role.

I believe the first student Beuregard was Floyd Cade, an engineering student.

Better watch out, Watts will make this one disappear too.

I'm sure Ray would love to make everyone from that staff disappear.

This is our UAB, Ray. Not yours. You need to leave now.

IIRC, the guy who owned it died.

How many dang pages was the K-Scope back then?

Isn't it at most a dozen or so pages now?

RE: Thoughts on Blazer Football .... from 1982 - PTBlazer - 04-16-2015 08:40 PM

That's a blast from the past.

1) I went to the Go-go's concert advertised on Page 9. With Paula Nabors. Very cool.

2) After we went to Rube Borrows, at Five Points South. Also mentioned.

3) Scott Adamson, who wrote the football article, eventually became Sports Editor of my hometown paper.

Wow. I'm old.

It's interesting how many alcohol ads are in the 1982 edition since the drinking age was 19.

Scott Adamson and I were friends in college. Funny guy.

Mark Sims could sell anything, and consistently sold an ad stack for a large paper and, if memory serves, for a while it was twice a week. The ed and ME post here so they'd know for sure. I didn't have a byline story in this one but may have written the Avant Guard and Golden Girl briefs.

I'm fairly certain that the "advisor" never entered our Ullman basement lair. This many years later, Bob Hester remains the best editor I ever worked for: he put up with my binge drinking and weird habits (I wrote stories on rolls of paper towels, so I didn't have to re-load the Selectric) and paid on time, every time.

Many people off that 1982 staff are very active in #FreeUAB today. Ray has pissed off the wrong pack of middle-aged degenerates.

That Adamson piece on page 20 is hysterical. Girls on a "quest for meat?!" FN hilarious. Now I know what I'd be like if I came of age in the era of Valley Girls and Fast Times. So bitchin.

Also on page 36...the birth of UAB Rifle. 03-no

The shag?

LOUIE LOUIE- Big on beach music, and
anything else recorded before 1966. A
great place to do the shag

Hilarious old ads and interesting articles throughout. I miss the attitude expressed in a lot of those pieces.
