ECU Pirates
Overall vs. D-I: 21-15
AAC: 4-5 (t-4th)
RPI: 85
SOS: 54

Since last meeting up on March 24th at Brooks Field, a game the Seahawks won 4-2, the two teams have been heading in opposite directions. UNCW has won 9 of it's last 11, including the last 7 straight. ECU, meanwhile, went 5-6 in the same span. The Pirates have struggled in AAC play, losing a home series to Memphis and a road series against South Florida, and currently sit in a 4-way tie for 4th in the 8-team conference.

The Seahawks look to sweep the season series on Tuesday night and take the 5th of their last 6 against ECU. It would also extend the Seahawks' win streak to 8. Currently the Diamond Hawks' 7-game win streak is tied with 3 other schools for 8th-longest in the country.

Baseball Preview: 25th-Ranked Seahawks Visit East Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks will take the field this evening as a nationally-ranked program for the first time this season when visit rival East Carolina for a 6:30 p.m. start as the two wrap up their annual home-and-home series at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

UNCW moved into D1Baseball.com's top-25 on Monday after finishing off a sweep of William & Mary over the weekend. The sweep extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games and helped them stay in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association. The 25th-ranked Seahawks trail the College of Charleston by 1.5 games with the Cougars having played one more series than UNCW.

Sitting at 25-8 on the season, this is the best record after 33 games since the 2008 Seahawks went 25-7-1 on their way to a 44-win season, a Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. UNCW owns the 10th best winning percentage in the nation at .758.

Earlier this season, the Seahawks topped East Carolina, 4-2, behind a three-run home run off the bat of Chris Gaffney. After a strong start from freshman Justin Crump, the UNCW bullpen went to work and held the Pirates scoreless and allowed just three base runners over the final 4.2 innings. Whitman Barnes picked up the win while Jared Gesell recorded the save.

The Pirates are 21-15 after dropping 2-of-3 at South Florida in American Athletic Conference action over the weekend. ECU prevented the sweep with a 6-0 win in the finale as four hurlers combined for the shutout. Cliff Godwin is in his first season at the lead of the program after serving as an assistant at Ole Miss for the previous three seasons. Godwin began his coaching career at the collegiate level as an assistant on UNCW's 2004 CAA Championship program before moving to the staff at Vanderbilt in 2005.

Tonight's game opens a four-game road stretch for the Seahawks and a stretch that sees them play eight of the next nine games on the road. UNCW returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Hofstra. The series opens on Friday with a 3 p.m. start at University Field.

I hope this game doesn't get rained out.

When is the last time we played a game vs ECU in which we were ranked and they were not?

Apr 17, 2013. We were ranked 25th and beat the Pirates 7-2 to complete the season sweep.

On Apr 29, 2008 we played ECU when we were ranked 24th. That was the same season we had an NCAA leading 21-game winning streak. However, they were also ranked 30th in one poll, and beat us 14-7 that day. They also swept the season series that year.

Weather reports only getting worse for tonight. I'm not optimistic about this one happening. ECU heads to ODU tomorrow so we can't simply play it then, either.

I had planned to go but decided to stay home after checking the weather

RE: Baseball: # 25 Seahawks @ ECU - Seahawk Nation 08 - 04-14-2015 01:08 PM

Based on ECU's game notes, if this game happens, they'll be throwing Sophomore lefty Jacob Wolfe (2-1, 2.96 ERA, 31 K's, 10 BB's, 45.2 innings), making his 9th start. In his most recent outing last Tuesday, Wolfe earned the W in a 7-5 victory over Campbell. He went 5 innings, allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2.

We'll be countering with Evan Phillips (1-1, 5.96 ERA, 29 K's, 19 BB's, 25.2 IP), making his 9th start as well. Phillips performed well against NC Central last week, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 10 and walking 2. He got a no-decision in the 3-2 victory.

Lightning delay in Greenville. No postponement/cancellation yet.

We all know you don't have to go to Red Lobster to get crabs in Greenville.

How can you not?

Herbie- speak from experience? :)

RE: Baseball: # 25 Seahawks @ ECU [Cancelled - Rain] - Seahawk Nation 08 - 04-15-2015 07:29 AM

Nice night for the CAA in non-conference. Charleston beat a ranked Coastal Carolina (# 39 RPI) 8-3 on the road, W&M knocked off ODU (# 112) while Delaware and Hofstra also won over Lehigh and NY Tech. Towson somehow tied Coppin St 7-7 to complete an undefeated night for the league.

The league climbed from 17th to 15th in the conference standings overnight. We also moved from 29th to 27th ourselves.

I am also guilty.

It's okay. Due to the game getting cancelled, I am issuing a conditional pardon for all of us.

At this point, we have missed games with NCSU and ECU. Are we doing good enough that missing out on those games(win or lose), really isn't affecting us?

We also had a rainout with Kentucky opening weekend.

I think missing out on these games is hurting us a bit in the polls. Our RPI is strong and we've won a lot of games, but since the Maryland series Mar 7-8, we've only had 5 top-100 RPI games (Columbia 2x, Campbell, ECU, Tulane) and went 3-2 in those games.

In order to move up in the polls our margin for error will be very small going forward. We can't afford any bad CAA losses, and taking advantage of our "RPI game" opportunities in the non-conference against UNC, Coastal, Campbell and Charleston will be crucial. The pollsters are only going to "buy in" that we're a true top 25 team if we dominate the latter part of our schedule.
