Saw that on another forum. No coincidence that the AD or president, can't remember which (maybe it is in the article) was a former lacrosse player in college. They had three wrestlers qualify for the NCAA tourney this year and one may be a placer next year. The NCAA championships will be in Cleveland in 2018 and the closest college to Quicken arena will no longer have wrestling - and Cleveland area is one of the top wrestling areas in the country. This is part of the continuation of a shift in sports that has been brought on by Title IX and how it was managed. And the seats of the remaining sports will become even more expensive and less attended.

Probably nothing if they could NOT afford to support ONE additional sport and they simply swapped wrestling for lacrosse because they wanted a lacrosse team-----then Title IX has nothing to do with it.
OTOH in the less likely scenario that they could afford (and were willing) to support ONE additional sport but could NOT afford to support TWO additional sports, then Title IX has a lot to do with it because they would have to adjust to a new men's sport by balancing it with Title IX mandated support for women's sports.
Ironically as many mid-majors continue to try to compete with the BIGs of the world in the "revenue sports" as best they can, many schools have cut back on the number of the non-revenue sports (men's and women's) they support in order to funnel more money into the "revenue sports" It is a tempting choice for many because the revenue sports have a marketing value that the non-revenue sports do not and besides with Title IX you can cut two at a time (balancing women's vs mens scholarships) and still be legal.
With regard to Title IX as everyone knows the big asymmetry in men's/women's sports is football. Those basketball only schools have a lot of extra cash to invest in MBB not only by elimination of the cost of a FB program itself but also in not having the increase in support of women's sports that football necessitates.

It would be interesting to know how some MAC schools support so many sports while UT is at the minimum. How do BG,MU and WMU afford the 18 scholarships and big costs for hockey? Or Kent having wrestling and men's track, EMU having wrestling and men's track and swimming, or Akron having men's track, soccer and rifle. In fact, EMU has all the sports we cut.

That is the take. they wanted lacrosse and dumped wrestling so they wouldn't have to add 2 sports. they will net to 0. The Title IX impact is that they couldn't just add men's lacrosse and keep both without adding a women's team. They were quick to indicate that it would require $800K to keep wrestling through 2017 - but no mention of any savings by moving to lacrosse and dumping wrestling. This guy doesn't realize how transparent his motives are to everyone else - or he does and just doesn't give a $hi!. The school is not getting bombarded by several wrestling leagues in Cleveland. But, I'm sure lacrosse will draw well in the Cleveland area....
