ESPN final bowl projections - Swearingen20 - 12-07-2014 10:10 AM

ESPN just updated and posted their final bowl projections. They changed Memphis from the Birmingham bowl yesterday to both picking Memphis for the Miami Bowl.

Well, if this is true, I know the players and my little brother (who is in the marching band) will be very happy to have an awesome trip. And I would be happy for them!

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - Swearingen20 - 12-07-2014 11:01 AM

If it is Miami, I really hope the University of Memphis has some GREAT deals for those students that really want to go to the game. Otherwise, the Memphis section in the stands might be pretty empty.

It's what the players and coaches want, so it's what we should want for them.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one, Mike. It would be much better for the overall program to play in Birmingham for fan travel, anticipation buildup to the game, and the generation of excitement flowing into next season. Having no one travel to the game in Miami is not good whether the players and staff want it or not. And obviously that's not a disrespect to the coaches and players, it's just what would be better long term for the whole program, and that takes precedent over short term rewards in my opinion.

If I were a player... then send me to South Beach.

Most important thing to the program is to win the game.

It's about the players

Where was all this fan support during our home games?

I agree with you 100% about Birmingham or even the Independence Bowl, Dallas or the Liberty Bowl. I hate the thought of the bowl game being in Miami this year. After 6 years of being garbage on the field, the Tigers FINALLY win a conference championship. A championship for the first time in most of our lifetimes....I'm 40 years old. Now we have the chance to take on the mighty SEC or another P-5 school, but for some damn reason they want to go play another G-5 school, 1000 miles away from Memphis, 3 days before Christmas, playing at a baseball stadium, on a Monday at 2pm when most of the country won't even be able to turn it on tv. That does NOTHING to show the rest of the country Memphis football is alive and well. As conference champion, our bowl game will be over and done with before even some of the middle of the road C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt teams have even played most of their bowl games.

If this is where the players and coaches want to go, so be it. Nothing us fans can do to change it. Yes they get south beach for a few days. However, how much fun will it be on game day and those players look up in the stands and there is only a few hundred Memphis fans there to cheer them on???? Some of those players will be playing the game of football for the last time. A nice send off sure would have been nice for those players that played during some of the lowest points in Memphis football history. Some of the players said at the post season dinner that they wanted Miami because they would be done with their season before Christmas. For the 1st three years of their Memphis playing career, they were finished before Christmas because there was no bowl game. Playing during the holidays is something special and they should be happy that other bowl games wanted Memphis during ESPN's bowl week.

Once again, if Miami is where the players want to go, so be it. Enjoy it.....all of you have earned it!!! Just PLEASE make it worth it and beat BYU!!!!!

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - EarthBoundMisfit - 12-07-2014 01:01 PM

While it is true that many fans may not be able to travel to the game....the national PERCEPTION is that the BEST AAC team is playing in the Miami Bowl.
We will never know if we could've beat UCF this year...although with a healthy Dorceus and Craft..I'd like to think the odds would be somewhat good.
As I said...the national perception would be that we were the BEST team from the AAC...so we back it up by winning it...and it REALLY helps in recruiting when our coaches get out there and preach it to recruits next year.

ESPN made for TV programming. Time slot is terrible but its a heck of a trip for the players; particularly the seniors.

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - Dak10 - 12-07-2014 01:10 PM

I'ts a toss up. Reward fans by playing in Birmingham vs. SEC opponent, or the kids that got us there by sending them to Miami beach over the holiday and slightly increasing their odds of getting the win (not that I think we would for certain lose in B-ham or anything). I would love for it to be Birmingham. I have family that lives there and it's an easy ride. Wont be making it to Miami, unfortunately, but I'm really excited for the team. Having been to both places, there's no question which place they'll enjoy more.

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - EarthBoundMisfit - 12-07-2014 01:21 PM

Not to mention, in 20 years....no one will remember that BYU had lost their qb to an injury.
BYU is a brand name among G5 schools.

Ramen, it is and it isn't. Look I played, I am saying all this as a former player. As a player, at 20 years old give or take I may have very well thought the same way and figured a great trip to warm weather in a cool city would be the best. From a bowl experience they would be correct, except for the actual game when no fans will be there. Yes it is about players but it is about fans too. Bowls exist for fans. Obviously TV has changed that some as they are made for TV now but without the fans, programs don't exist. Ay this stage we need the program to grow, over just having short term rewards regarding a party city like Miami. It's a tough call, no doubt. When were young we all think one way and then we gain wisdom over time. I just think the administration is being short sighted for the reasons I've stated. It doesn't mean I'm right, it's my opinion. Maybe it won't matter, I just tend to think it would build the excitement for the program as a whole to have it in a place where the actual fans can travel.

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - jaaaasonl - 12-07-2014 02:34 PM

What keeps getting lost on some people is that the CONFERENCE is going to tell us where to play. Tiger administration will have some input, but the decision is going to be made for us. If we (the AAC champion) beat BYU, that looks good for us AND the conference.

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - tigeriron - 12-07-2014 02:38 PM

what tv network is picking the Miami bowl up? imo, like bb at a maui or Bahamas tournament, the tv exposure is greater and the kids get to see the world a lil bit. I just think it'll be a freakin blast for all.. and hopefully the network hypes the crap out of it.

RE: ESPN final bowl projections - EarthBoundMisfit - 12-07-2014 02:40 PM

The perception , is that the BEST AAC team will play in Miami.
If that is us....then that is something we can take to recruiting.
Fair or not....whoever watches the game will go in there hearing about how the AAC team in the Miami Bowl is the best AAC team.
