"A new entertainment district for Memphis was announced one day after Shelby County voters cast 74.758 ballots to approve the sale of liquor by the drink. Located near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Cooper Street, extending to Trimble and Florence Streets, the district was named Overton Square for its proximity to the park of the same name. According to Commercial Appeal reporter Louis Silver, Overton Square was "patterned after the mood of such spots as New York City's Upper East Side and San Francisco's Ghirardeli Square." The district opened in May 1970 with its flagship resturant, TGI Friday's, a New York City based chain. The Press-Scimitar's Robert Johnson wrote that Friday's opened by "putting a sign in the window, and by 7 that night they had about 200 people inside. It's been that way ever since." Other popular businesses included the resturants Bombay Bicycle Club and Paulette's, Lafayette's Music Room and Burkle's Bakery..."
