Read Option - niuguy - 09-13-2014 12:52 AM

I just rewatched the NIU - NU game and noticed how well Hare ran the read option. I haven't seen it run that well since Harnish! Did anyone else notice this? If Hare can throw like he did against NU aaaand run a mean read option we're going to be pretty good on offense this year.

Agree. I meant to mention that also.

Part of that may have been NU keyed on the rb never thinking Hare was much of a runner.

Last year, the opponent keyed on JL & he really didn't want to give up the ball and/or didn't really "sell" it.

I know this should be on the Toledo game thread, but their offense looked awfully similar to niu's. It was almost like they watched our film and said "it works, let's do the same"

Perhaps. I think there it's a real skill though. He reminds me of Harnish because Harnish was (I think) way better than average at holding that ball until the very last second and really keying in on that DE. I also see a lot of QBs run the RO and 90% of the time give it to the RB because I don't think they trust their decision to hold/give away. Hare seems really confident last week for somebody with so little playing time.

Can't tell you how many times I was fooled by who had the ball with CH & Spann/Hopkins.

+1. Happened all the time to me. Agreed about Hare and how smooth he runs it. Today will tell a lot about him and/or our future QB who will take most reps IMO.

Harnish was spectacular with his ball handling running the option. It's really an underrated skill, and can add to an offense. Hare looked to be very good at it last week, but I need to see him do it a little more before I can officially judge that. If he is very good at it, it will make his running skills look a lot better (as it did with Chandler).

Hare ran it really well FOR SOMEONE WITH SO LITTLE PLAYING TIME.

I think with more and more playing time and experience he may approach the level of Harnish, who really was awesome at it. Hare is off to a really good start.

Hopefully we won't rely on the read option too much with Hare. He's certainly no Jordan Lynch when it comes to taking punishment. I really hope they worked a lot on the bubble screens. With the weapons we have, we should be able to break some long ones like we have in the past. I thought we were the top bubble team in the nation for the last several years. The last two games... Yikes! I do love the read option to keep the defense off balance but the bubbles have been a big part of our success and I hope it continues to be a strength of ours.

True. I don't want to see him hurt. That said, if you have a real threat at the read option it helps your running backs a lot. I think ultimately with Jordan Lynch we were too reliant on him just taking the ball up the middle himself. I really think if he had Harnish's read-option ability it could have added a bit more complexity for the defense to handle when we played teams like Florida State.
