CUSA Finished With Expansion - AppManDG - 07-25-2014 06:11 AM

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said during at CUSA's media day the conference is finished with expansion. “Today we’re kind of on a pivot point,” he said at Conference USA Media Day Wednesday. “Western Kentucky is the last piece of our realignment puzzle. Realignment was a very taxing and challenging thing for all of us, so it’s nice to put all the pieces together and be in a position to move forward."

UL fans just fainted.

CUSA is on the decline.

I think I'll have a beer.

CUSA would reverse expand to 12 if they could. As they payouts continue to surge, the two extra teams will eventually cost the other teams $1 million or more.

I hope you really don't believe that. And if the SBC could take on Missouri state and JMU which puts us at 14, I sure hope they do it.

If MoSt and JMU accepted, we would be at 13 at which time Idaho would be dropped to get us to the magic number of 12. The key now is to have solid football programs that help you rank higher in the payout and can potentially reap the financial windfall of the top G5 program selected in the bowl.

I think this is probably true but I just don't see James Madison pulling the trigger on the Sun Belt. Most likely our top candidates will be Eastern Kentucky, Missouri St and the dreaded Liberty.

I also believe CUSA would prefer to be at 12 vs. 14 in a stable realignment atmosphere (likely the next couple years). That said they likely don't mind 14 for now as they are protected when/if the next round occurs. However if that occurs don't look for them to go back to 14.

The only way the SBC adds two is to exercise the Idaho 2016 clause.

Believe we could get JMU if we really wanted them that badly, but who wants
a team that just wants to leave. Missouri State and EKU would be the only
viable candidates would think.

No....we have not fainted......there will be more realignment but not in the way that everyone may be thinking......

RE: CUSA Finished With Expansion - AppManDG - 07-25-2014 07:56 AM

Expansion hopefuls were also dealt another blow yesterday.

Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon Steinbrecher speaking at yesterday's media day said "The MAC is the only FBS school that has neither added or lost an institution member during that time. We have 13 football teams the next two years, then revert back to 12, and I don't anticipate a change to that in the foreseeable future."

Tick, Tick, Tick.....

Yup, it'll never be over...

RE: CUSA Finished With Expansion - DoubleAggie - 07-25-2014 08:22 AM

I understand that many of existing C-USA were former Sun Belt institutions.
But, honestly, I can't even begin to name the schools because most of them don't matter.

C-USA is largely irrelevant.

I know their fans would say the same thing about the Sun Belt,
but if it's a choice between watching a C-USA game and pet videos on YouTube,
I'm still goin' pet videos.

RE: CUSA Finished With Expansion - moehler - 07-25-2014 08:31 AM

Banowsky just made it official what we already knew, if there were any delusional JMU fans who were holding on to hope that somehow, out of blue, an invitation was forth coming, this should put an end to that dream.

I suppose CUSA claims superiority over the SunBelt due to 4 of their schools (La Tech, Rice, S Miss & UTEP) being long time 1-A/ FBS programs. But when you look at the rest of the members the conference is made up of 1-AA move ups (UAB 1996, Marshall 1997, MTSU 1999, WKU 2010) and four schools who didn't have a program prior to the late 1990's (FAU FIU, ODU and UNCC). Hardly any difference from the SunBelt.

One has to think the fans at Rice have to be wondering what happened. In the mid 90's the Owls were in the Southwest Conference filling up a 70,000 seat stadium playing people like Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas.

RE: CUSA Finished With Expansion - bullitt_60 - 07-25-2014 08:58 AM

How much more wealthy is CUSA than the SBC?

Was there an * at the bottom that said this...

*until someone moves up

RE: CUSA Finished With Expansion - EKUSteve - 07-25-2014 09:19 AM

It appears that the only one of the forgotten four (SMU, TCU, Houston, Rice) that got through all the realignment having been dumped from a major conference and getting back into one was TCU...

I'm also hoping there is enough room that EKU can step up. I know we have work to do. Waiting on the announcement of what the Roy Kidd Stadium work will be that I'm hearing will start after this season.
