W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - nogretheogre - 07-16-2014 08:54 AM

To continue this non-sports thread, some tangentially related news:

I know many here have argued that EVMS is mediocre at best with regard to it's reputation, despite it's young age.

Norfolk General Hospital, the main teaching facility of EVMS, is now ranked the #1 hospital in Virginia.
http://hamptonroads.com/2014/07/us-news-names-sentara-norfolk-states-top-hospital

So now we have seen EVMS slowly climb the US News rankings as an institution in two regards, first in the Primary Care rankings (#55 of 153 US medical schools -UVA is #29 and MCV/VCU is #61-). Research rankings are another story, with EVMS unranked, but much of that may be related to the lack of non-medical graduate students (and thus diminished grants, etc) at EVMS compared with the other large university centers.

This merger...yet another project moving at a glacial pace.

It is moving along. College and EVMS have begun a series of cooperative programs that begin this fall involving students and faculty at both institutions.

A union of W&M and EVMS as the W&M Med School appears on track

I think ODU will push for a merger with EVMS as well. I'm not sure what will happen in the future but adding an already established medical school would help push ODU's reputation as a strong metropolitan science-based university. Plus, ODU is literally a few miles away unlike W&M.

All valid points. Especially with geography, ODU makes a lot of sense. ODU has been pushing for the merger for a while.

Only problem is EVMS seems to really want W&M. By all accounts things are moving ahead on this, albeit at a glacial, W&M pace.

IMO, W&M is their choice. However, the bridges back to ODU are still intact should things fall apart.

Definitely hit the nail on the head. W&M has the prestige factor, a lot more $$$, and over 300 years of education in Virginia which are all qualities that ODU doesn't have.

I hope to see an EVMS merger with the two Norfolk-based schools. It only seems practical for an ODU-EVMS merger to occur as the campuses become closer due to collaboration and transportation (light rail expansion). However, no matter what happens, I hope to see ODU continue to partner with EVMS to help the greater Hampton Roads community.

The proximity of the two schools is semi-irrelevant. The precedent of medical schools being in urban areas, while the undergraduate area is in a more remote suburban location has long since set and successful throughout the country. Furthermore, 45 minute drives are not prohibitive enough to discourage sharing staff.

That being said, I do see some joined programs with ODU, even if it becomes WM Med. Specifically those that are more computer/tech-heavy, such as Electronic medical record work, simulation, biotech, etc.

I just want to see something happen. It's been all fluster and bluster as of late and I'd rather see one of the two universities make progress. Progress is progress.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - BigTribe - 07-23-2014 02:45 PM

A merger of two institutions like W&M and EVMS takes a great deal of time and careful study.

They established last spring a joint program between both schools that begins the process of EVMC becoming the W&M Medical School.

ODU is completely on the sideline: don't forget that EVMS reached out to interest from William and Mary and their own interest in W&M to start this process, a move carefully done on purpose to carry a message to ODU, who had made a number of earlier overtures to the medical organization, that it wasn't interested in the Norfolk school.

The cooperative programs starting this fall continue the march to an EVMS/William & Mary Medical School.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - Below avg - 07-23-2014 03:09 PM

EVMS has been just down the road from ODU since it's inception. It seems as if they really wanted to merge they could have made it happen years ago. It wasn't until WM made their plans to look into a merger known that it became an issue with them. I've lived in this area for years and never once heard anyone from ODU mention a desire for the two institutions to join forces. Maybe the administration assumed that if any merger took place, they were the only choice. I'm in favor of WM taking their time but in the end I really would like to see EVMS become William and Mary's medical school.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - nogretheogre - 09-24-2017 08:25 AM

It has been roughly 3 years since the last post here as well as any info on the WM website.

I think this would help us with our national profile since a large percentage of science research originates in medical schools. This could sway an athlete to some degree if he/she was interested in pursuing a career in medicine. We have already had lengthy discussions re: grad transfers and available programs (realistic or not).

I suppose Reveley is passing the buck on this one, and as such, the new President wouldnt likely make such a large decision in his first year. Looks like there will be another 2 years to wait...

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - SoCal Frank - 09-24-2017 10:44 AM

I recall talking with TR about this. The key issue was not the hospital in Norfolk, but the hospital system in Newport News ( name escapes me). Wm and Maryneeded. Teaching hospital nearby. It's complicated.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - Tribal - 09-24-2017 11:18 AM

I'm not sure why we need to affiliate with a hospital if we dont have a medical school or even a PhD program in biology.

Assuming there's a reason why we need such an affiliation: I don't know where we'd find the money but maybe we could work out a deal with Sentara or Riverside.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - soccerguy315 - 09-24-2017 12:47 PM

my understanding is we want (or, wanted) the medical school and thus the need for a relationship with a hospital?

medical school graduates generally earn good money and would be a good source to build the endowment in the future

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - tribeintexas - 09-24-2017 02:19 PM

EVMS has a small endowment around $80M so they wanted to be affiliated with a reputable school like W&M. FYI, VCU's Medical College of VA has $345M endowment. The problem is that W&M's endowment of $800M might not be big enough to overtake EVMS. If I remember correctly, ODU wanted to be in discussion about EVMS. However, ODU's endowment is around $213M so I don't think they have enough resources. It will be cool to have a medical school, but everything points to $$$.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - nogretheogre - 09-29-2017 05:04 PM

I dont think the endowment is relevant with regard to overtaking the university. WM doesnt have to "buy" it. EVMS is a public-private (but lately more public due to increasing state support), so it would probably just take some financial lawyering and the support of the Commonwealth to merge the institutions.

Hospital ownership of Norfolk General is the corporate Sentara. Most medical schools have dissolved their ownership of teaching hospitals because they tend to be money losers when run by universities. For example, Georgetown's main teaching hospital is Medstar corporation.

I would be surprised that a loose association with a Peninsula hospital (likely Riverside) would deter or obstruct any relationship with EVMS or Sentara Norfolk General (what relationship would they even have...orthopedics for sports injuries is all that I can think of?). EVMS students already rotate through both Riverside and Sentara hospitals. Furthermore, the medical school and students would largely remain in the Norfolk campus and Hampton Roads hospitals. There would be very little value in trying to bring them to Williamsburg.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - hktribefan - 09-29-2017 08:04 PM

Cornell's med school is in New York City. Much longer drive to Ithaca than Norfolk to Williamsburg.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger - nogretheogre - 11-16-2017 02:21 PM

Governor-elect Northam has ties to WM and EVMS. EVMS grad and staff doc himself. Son attended W&M. I wonder if he will make this happen.

EVMS moving up in rankings. Time to pounce?

I like the idea of a merger. Having a medical school ups the ante.
