Zimmerman Loses Defamation Lawsuit Against NBC - CliftonAve - 06-30-2014 09:18 AM

I found NBC's editing of the tapes to be appalling. While it did not have an impact on the outcome of the case, I do believe it played a significant factor in the harmful public discourse that followed.

Another ruling I don't understand.

It's pretty hard to prove the damages necessary to win a defamation suit against established media. Usually they settle, because they can settle cheaper than the cost of litigation plus a probability-weighted estimation of damages. But when the media fight, the deck is stacked in their favor.

This.

NBC News has never apologized on-air for the hatchet job they did in that story (just a written press release), and has never identified the "longtime producer" who was supposedly "fired" for orchestrating the attack.

RE: Zimmerman Loses Defamation Lawsuit Against NBC - UofMstateU - 06-30-2014 11:22 AM

The issue I have with the judges ruling is that she said since Zimmerman was famous, he was set to the higher standard.

The problem is that Zimmerman wasnt famous until the hit-job piece was released.

This needs to be appealed. It pretty much opens up the media to do hatchet jobs on anyone, and if the hatchet job gets the person some notoriety, the media will be shielded from prosecution.

Defamation is hard. I'll bet this hinged on the trial and the issues being of public concern.

If Richard Jewel, the cop in the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Bombings, won his lawsuit then Zimmerman should be a shoe in.

And thats the sort of thing happening I was pointing out. I remember the Jewel hatchet job. THis is the sort of thing this ruling says would be allowed.

The danger here is that the media is allowing to "create" perpetrators by sensationalism and distortion, and then claiming to be immune to prosecution cause they made the person famous by defaming them.

i hate Z, but he should be living comfortably off NBC's dime for quite some time.

Z cashed in all his karma chips on the martain case anyways.

Yeah, he needs to realize he’s ahead of the game already.

Being falsely accused of murder on national TV... His words to a 9-1-1 dispatcher twisted to make him appear racist... sitting in the defendant's chair in the most high-profile media-circus trial since O.J. ... being unemployable with a greek-chorus of social-media haters openly wishing bad things to happen to him, and cheering whenever they do happen...

That is Not "ahead of the game".

I think it was pretty obvious that Zimmerman is a racist regardless of whatever MSNBC did. I'm glad the courts realized this.

I'm not the one who killed an unarmed boy because he was black.

So you respond with even more race baiting. Not surprising that your low IQ, simple mind can't think of anything else.

From what I can tell about her case, I think she was grossly over-charged and over-sentenced. If I had executive authority in Florida I would be looking very closely at a pardon or commutation. But what she has been through in her life does not diminish what George Zimmerman has been through.

The Alexander case is also (by the way) a clear repudiation to those who claim the state of Florida does not take seriously threats against the life of African-American males.

RE: Zimmerman Loses Defamation Lawsuit Against NBC - pharaoh0 - 06-30-2014 02:45 PM

Oh no... The usual anti-Zimmerman posters are here.

Zimmerman's case was dismissed because the Judge probably had a belief that Zimmerman was guilty. That's not the way the justice system should work. Given the facts (the purposeful acts and that he was not a celebrity), he case should have gone forward.

The same thing happened to OJ when a known fence was transformed into a memorabilia collector and he was charged with reclaiming his stolen items.

The Courts should be blind and previous situations should not come into the decision...but, in many cases that doesn't happen.

Then you and George Zimmerman have that in common.

That is Not "ahead of the game".

Ahead of the game in perception, not reality.

Innocent or not, applying the full weight of all the crap he went through,
it was highly conceivable that things easily could have turned out worse.
