I kept laughing at that ULM on the top.
Not sure why it is so funny to me. The L is something.

I broke out laughing when I went down to Monroe last season and discovered their band was still playing the Indian War Chant...only the words had changed to reflect the Warhawk mascot.

It sounded really strange.

I miss "Cherokee". Sooner or later someone is going to have to give the band the ok to play it.

The stAte logo came about when Larry Lacewell was coach and AD and was thinking of hiring a design firm to come up with something. He mentioned that to one of the trainers who told him thought he had something he'd like. He came back with some drawings a former student manager had left in his desk when he graduated and with a few minor tweaks became the stAte logo.

When Joe Hollis arrived as coach he had a design firm come up with a new design of the letters ASU with an Indian head inside the letter S. Then another design firm was paid to stylize it more. For the next 8 years fans complained about the logo and when the NCAA started squeezing the Indian mascot thing they brought back what the fans had been demanding all along.

The wolf logo they hired a NY design firm and the initial drawings were pretty well hated. A Little Rock company was given the chance to do a design on a spec basis and the chancellor didn't care much for their work either. He finally went to the university Creative Services Office and asked them if they wanted to compete against the two firms and submit a design and their design won out.

You end up better off when the designs come from people who are connected to the school instead of some expert who looks up your info on wikipedia and maybe spends a day on campus.

As a non fan I like the "Red Wolves" much better than the Indians. Not to many or any to my knowledge using Red Wolves. Indians was a generic football name. I'm still confused on the ULM Warhawks. Are they the WW II Plane or some sort of bird?

RE: Favorite SBC Team Logos - RamblinRedWolf44 - 06-10-2014 06:17 PM

From what I've read, they're essentially hawks but they pay homage to WWII fighter planes that were nicknamed 'warhawks'

The thread talked about favorite logos, and there the UL logo was unofficial. Therefore I linked to some unofficial GaSt logos that were my favorite.

Go back to talking about BBQ, I enjoyed reading those posts.

OK then, here's my favorite version of the GaSo eagle:

Serious time....Bald Eagles DO NOT DODGE aircraft like every other bird. They own the sky, someone must not have been paying attention.

I have personally had several very close calls with eagles while flying over the Atchafalaya Basin.

As an outsider looking in, the 'Gorton Fisherman' is much, much stronger of a mark than the corncob guy. But I understand that fan favorites may not always align with what looks the best, or what it more universally marketable.

You got to stick with what the fans are buying. That's basically how we brought back the stAte logo.

Had to do it DG 03-wink

Oh Geezzzz.... Thanks for rekindling the nightmare! 03-banghead03-banghead That thing was hideous! The fans boo'd it off the field at Auburn. Kinda felt sorry for the kid inside.

True story. Our SID comes up to me the next saturday and says DG get today's game program, it's one for the ages. The backlash against that thing was so bad the university pulled it on Thursday, but since the program was sent to the publisher on Tuesday on the cover in living color was, as I referred to him, Shoney's Big Boy Yosef. Still got it in the archives.

Side note to the story. Until 1982 App always used a student as our mascot. After that thing was pulled we were without a mascot. The school had given the departing "Yosef" the costume to keep. An insurance guy from Boone who had been Yosef during his college days assumed the role for that year (1999). Old Charlie was the best mascot we've had since 1982, some say ever.

An alumni focus group came up with that thing. Lot's of soccer mom's and education people on it. I know a guy who was on the committee and I give him grief over it every time I see him. He said the idea was to go for a "elementary school kid friendly" mascot. I asked him how many elementary kids were at App.

Invite the band alumni back for a weekend. Let them get up there and do as they damn well please.

When I was at Tarleton, we had a spirit organization that lead the university in yells (we had cheerleaders too, but these were just a bunch of drunk cowboys who yelled profane things and got the students to do the same). The university eventually cracked down on them and forbid them from certain yells

Come homecoming, the alumni come back without a care in the world. They say all the things the actives cant say because they are grownups throwing money at the donation coffers.

It basically pays homage to General Claire Chenault and the flying tigers. Chenault is from the area. The red tailed hawk of which many call Bayou Desiard, which runs through campus, home is also part of the logo. If you will notice, our mascot, Ace, wears a bomber jacket and goggles. Also, one of our logos looks like the flying tiger logo, replacing the tiger with the Hawk. Personally I wish we would have incorporated the plane more.

4. Louisiana: The fleur de lis has been done to death in sports but the overall logo is decent looking.
5. Idaho: A bit bland but workable
6. Georgia Southern
7. NMSU
8 - 10. Georgia State, USA, and Troy: All of these kind of look like they were done on Microsoft clip art to me.
11. App State: The block A I would put in the middle of the pack but the guy with the corn cob pipe I would not. In a time when most of the other schools in the country are going away from cartoony looking logos, App State decides to switch back to one.

Damn right! I support Victory Yosef!

Or, in a time when most schools are going to cookie cutter modernistic representations App State has decided to return to their roots and promote tradition.

Oh yea, we only care about what App fans think about our logo.

The older I get the more I like the academic logo and wish we still used it for athletics.

I wish we still used the "academic" logo still as well. The new ones have always been cartoonish to me. Another Grube / Baker fail I believe.

Indeed. Still makes me mad. That will always be my favorite, "Erk's Eagle".

a lot of App fans, including myself hate the cartoon corn cob on helmets, if they wanted to put a small one the shoulder pads, or on the pants, fine. I don't know why we are screwing around with the block A.
