Here is Dave Hackenberg's Latest Column

I definitely agree with Hackenberg that Coach K is an "offensive-minded" coach. On the Coaches Show tonight, Coach K said that they give up some easy layups in transition because they send 4 guys to the boards to get offensive rebounds and send 1 guy back on defense after a missed shot. He described this as "high risk/high reward." The high risk being that you give up some easy baskets in transition and the high reward being that you get a lot of chances at offensive rebounds and second chance points. He mentioned that Tom Izzo of Michigan State does this also and has done so for many years. I know a lot has been said about their poor defensive play at times this season. It is apparent that Coach K's style of play is focused on the offensive end.

While that may be , and I did not see the Eastern Game, there is still room for improvement. That could be a good thing. Against Ohio, there were some flat out, blown assignments under the basket from the weak side. The also left the three point line wide open in the corner. This is why I feel about 5 teams have an equal chance of winning the MAC Title. Toledo is a team that could get knocked out the second round or win the whole thing.

Covering the reverse corner 3 point shooter has been a huge problem all year. We just don't get the backside help out quickly enough when teams reverse the ball. OU couldn't hit the threes, except for the one guard and Kellog a few late, but most teams have had a guy or two who really hurt us. If OU had made the shots in the first half that they made in the second it would likely have been even closer than it was and we might have been on the short end.

I have no problem with Coach TK being an off. minded coach. Trying to get more off. rebounds which can lead to baskets in transition for the opposition is a problem but I can look past that as well. The problem I have is with their defense is with the basics, getting down in a defensive stance, moving your feet, basic positioning with where the ball is, where the basket is.
