I hope someone asks about Greg McClinton practicing and the possibility of him playing any this season. It would be nice to have a little more depth when the team heads to Frisco.

The main depth they need right now is at point guard. I don't see Caver playing effectively for potentially 120+ minutes over 3 consecutive days which would be even worse if ODU falls outside of the top 4.

We'd probably have to lose 4/6 of the rest of our games to fall outside of the top 4.

We don't win the first tourney game it won't much matter about this lack of depth worry I read about on here. And I remember Trey Freeman playing an awful lot of minutes over four days a couple years ago. Injury is a different concern but you guys have bascally said our back up point guard is not very good and they tried Green and it didn't work it's been reported.

Caver is a stud, I'm not worried, he just played 40 minutes again last game.

I didn't say or imply that it was likely to happen, but still a possibility. Doesn't matter anyway to what the message was. 120 minutes over 3 days is going to be telling if ODU makes it that far, especially if they are up against a better rested MTSU in that 3rd game. It's not like we own them on our best days.

It's one thing to play 40 minutes. It is yet another to be effective at both ends of the floor for 40 minutes, much less doing it 3 days in a row. I realize that Jeff has backed himself into a corner here by not having an adequate backup at the point this season and it has caused Caver to play every minute. Just pointing out that it may become a problem next month if ODU is fortunate enough to make it to the conference final. If I was the other coach I would exploit that by making Caver work hard on defense in that 3rd game when ODU was in the man-to-man (which is most of the time).

Trey Freeman played too much and one could make an argument it's a reason why we lost the title game. Our best player had no more juice

Exactly, Freeman went for about 35 the third game and played about the whole game in a blow out. The 4th game it was obvious he didn't have the legs to make his shots.

Against La Tech Jones seemed to be buying some rest for Caver by giving ball handling chores against their press in the second half to Green or Haynes, even though Caver was in the game. I think we'll see more of this as the season winds down.

Ignoring that it could have just been an off game, freeman worked a lot harder on offense than Caver does. Freeman really worked to be the primary option and to
Run off screens. Caver mainly stands around the 3 point line unless he has ball. Addtionally, Freeman dominated three games in a row in cusa tourney then did it again in the postseason tourney.

Don't get me started with the standing around. It's not just Caver. I think that's what leads to the scoring slumps. We seem to do better with a weave or inside-out passes than passing around the three point line.

We decided the flu risk currently running through the program wasn't worth the risk of going to the breakfast. You folks that went, let us know if you hear anything.

Glad you didn't go, Mac. We need you at 100% tomorrow night.

I totally forgot about it until I was at the gym this morning. By that time, it was too late.

RE: Monarch Breakfast - monarchfan4life - 02-14-2018 08:43 AM

The news from the breakfast is not good - Trey Porter came down with the flu overnight. He, Coach Jones, and MHJ are all resting today and they are hopeful they will be able to be well enough to be at tomorrow's game.

Otherwise, it was a good breakfast, well-attended, and, Mac, the bacon was crispy. The underclassmen were in attendance and were interviewed by Ted.

Totally agree. I often times compare our offense to others and it just seems most other offenses are far more active. We seem to just pass it around the perimeter and everybody stands and watches. Personally I love the Marshall offense of drive and dish or lay it up.
The weave is also fun to watch.

Porter with the flu isn't sounded so great.

We seem to do the standing around when Caver, BJ, or Haynes is out of the game. Either that or we have Porter or Brandan coming out and handling it at the top, which I equally dislike. When all 3 are on the court, they all handle the ball and we usually move pretty well. Xavier has given us some good scoring spurts in spots this season, but the overall look of the offense drops off considerably when he is in the game.

Well, we've had very few scoring slumps so I'm not concerned with his activity of offense. I just think the wings tend to be more active than the PG in our offense.
