Was watching Modern Marvels last nite - DrTorch - 01-03-2014 10:45 AM

About innovations from the 1970s.

I never knew that the US (and USSR) got into a race w/ the Concorde group to build an SST.

$1B taxpayer dollars spent (late 1960s dollars), w/ nothing but a museum piece to show for it.

And all that engineering talent wasted, instead of improving the auto manufacturing industry, or developing some viable commercial product.

Oh, and it was another Kennedy folly, more money wasted by Dems.

So, we got into a race with the Russians and the French won?

The Concorde no longer flies. So not sure anyone really won.

Bingo.

That's a harder question to answer. But it had a 25 year life, which isn't bad.

I guess I failed to mention that the US mandate was ours needed to be bigger and faster...so the US design was for 300 people and to go Mach 3. Basically, couldn't be built.

The concord could still fly (not the one that blew up obviously) it's just not economically feasible.

Meh. I think money is being wasted on a lack of talent in some cases. I went to school with an engineer who's working on the 787, and let's just say that I'm going to go out of my way to avoid flying on one.

I went to school with guys like that. I'm leery of bridges they might've designed or built.

Considering a 777 cruises at .92 Mach at altitude, you don't need speed, you need seats. To go 2+ you go from a 500 seat aircraft to maybe 120
