2014 Baseball Preseason Top 40 Polling - waltgreenberg - 12-20-2013 05:17 PM

And the joke that is Collegiate Baseball is the first one out of the gate and, as usual, they have more wrong than they have right (IMO)...

Rice comes in at #17, which for Collegiate Baseball, is quite high for them. I suspect we'll be just outside the Top 10 in the more reputable polls that undertake considerably more analysis (e.g., Sorenson, Fitt, Rogers, the Writers).

Miss. St #2??? Virginia not in the Top 10 (when most pundits consider them Top 5 preseason along with CSF, Oregon, LSU and FSU)?

Others of note: #19 TCU, #20 Texas, #25 A&M, #26 Stanford, #38 ECU. [/quote]

MSU fans have been very cordial. I'm happy for them for the #2 ranking.

It would be nice to get a home and home series with MSU but SEC teams rarely travel for their OOC games and certainly not to a school that is constantly in the Top 15.

Top 15? Rarely to they schedule an OOC game-- home or away-- against a Top 100 program, and when they do it's invariably a mid-week, in-state rivarly game (e.g., MSU or Ole Miss vs. USM, LSU vs. Tulane, Kentucky vs. Louisville, Florida vs. UCF).

Another ranking is out. Who are these guys?

No idea, Guy-- but a quick look at their rankings and the lack of accurate research in their writeup (see the Rice preview) indicates a pretty low knowledge quotent, IMO. Byrd and Ewing saw limitted action in 2013? Hunter K. is currently injured (with questions on whether he'll be ready for the season), and even if healthy, JC Reeves would likely have been our starting catcher. Blake Fox will likely be our Saturday starter (not in the bullpen). McCanna will be either our Sunday or mid-week starter; not in the bullpen. No mention of Duplantier, Warren or Reeves.

He concludes his preview with Rice has every reason to be optimistic for the upcoming season and aim for a return trip to Omaha...but he ranks us #24? North Carolina is ranked ahead of NC State and FSU? How? Mississippi State ranked all the way down at #14? Arkansas at #13 after losing their entire pitching staff (which was their team strength)?

Sorry, I can't believe I'm saying this, but this ranking is worse than Collegiate Baseball....and it's very clear from the previews that he's done little more than look at the current roster and last year's stat pages.

I appreciate more and more guys covering college baseball. Can't hurt. But BA and Sorenson are the real deal. Can't wait until their previews start coming out.

When does practice start?

Walt: Thanks for starting the baseball threads after the football game.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but Rice Baseball has a twitter account now. @RiceOwlsBSB

Small group (up to 3 players and a coach) and 1-on-1 drills and bullpens have already started. Full squad workouts and intrasquad games can officially (by NCAA rules) start on January 24th (3 weeks before Opening Day).

Well, here's a second preseason poll (from College Baseball Nation) that has us ranked at #17...

Both Baseball America and Perfect Game come out with their preseason Top 25 listings early this coming week.

RE: 2014 Baseball Preseason Top 40 Polling - grol - 01-25-2014 11:21 AM

Not a poll, but Eric and Mike Rooney give both UT and Rice some love. It's around the 24 to 25 minute mark in the latest Baldcast. They mention other teams that could win it all, too, but focus on both Garrido and WG as having what it takes to make another good run to Omaha.

And, of course, Eric again declares himself a Rice homer.

In related news, check out "Entitlement" as the new word at UT. Based on the comments following, the UT fans aren't buying Augies latest BS.

Sorry, but unless UT has several impressive offensive newcomers, I just don't see them as legitimate contenders. Yes, they should have a strong and deep pitching staff (though I question whether they have a truly elite guy of the caliber of Jungman, Ruffin, Workman or Green), but where are they going to get their offense. IMO, they are borderline Top 25 at best, and that may be a bit of a stretch.

As I said earlier, this should be a very interesting season as there appears to be 5 - 7 elite teams (CSF, LSU, Oregon State, Vandy, UVA, FSU, NC State), followed closely by as many as 10 - 12 additional teams with legitimate Omaha aspirations (including Rice, Indiana, Louisville, Miss. St., Kansas State, South Carolina, Florida, UNC, Oregon, Arizona State, Miami). Oregon and Miss St are receiving some Top 10 consideration, but despite their elite pitching, I question if they have enough offense for such high rankings.

How one ranks these teams is a grab bag. My guess is we'll be in the #13 - #18 range in most polls. IMO, we have one of the more balanced, top to bottom offenses in the country (at least on paper), with significant upperclass experience and leadership. If McCanna, Duplantier and McCarthy step up as starting pitchers, as expected, and a couple guys (e.g., Ditman, Rutter, C.Smith, T.Teykl, Williamson) can contribute in the bullpen to augment Lemond, there's no limit to how far this team can go.

#15 in Baseball America's preseason Top 25...

http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/virginia-tops-bas-preseason-top-25/

...with #18, Texas, #19 TCU and #24 A&M.

Some real surprises here such as #3 Indiana and, most notably, ULaLa at #14.

Detailed capsules and grades for offense, pitching, power, et al. forthcoming.

With the way BA doesn't downgrade their preseason pick who win and Indiana's/ULaLa's weak non-conference schedules (Indiana's only early Top 25 opponent is #20 Louisville on March 1; ULaLa has none), these two could stay aloft in the rankings for quite a while ... unless, of course, they falter.

Indiana warranted a Top 10 ranking, but I just felt #3 was way too high; especially given their lack of a competitive schedule. I'm surprised Louisville dropped all the way down to #20.
