John Neal should be our next HC. - Hell_Blazer - 12-01-2013 11:30 PM

D is how you win at our level Coach Neal would do great and he knows what we are up against.

How much head coaching experience does he have. 05-stirthepot

IMO, UAB needs its own Larry Coker.

Closest we have is Bobby Bowden.

Or Chizik 05-stirthepot

Seriously, if we could just get Gene to put in two years' work building anything that resembles a defense, it would be a help to the program.

Yea lets hire a position coach that no one wants as a D coordinator LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

RE: John Neal should be our next HC. - FNblazer - 12-01-2013 11:49 PM

Well McGee is 5-19 now so on paper that qualifies him for the Auburn job!

03-lmfao After what those bastards did to Sullivan, there's no way they will allow an "Auburn Man" to be head coach of UAB Football.

In 2000 and 2001, we ranked Top-20 nationally in almost every defensive category.........top-10 in some. The man knows defense.......he also knows that Oregon offense inside and out, a GREAT offense for RB's and dual-threat QB's.

Coach Neal coaches the defensive backs in the pass happy PAC 12. Our DBs need help, badly.

John Neal is a smart guy, with a great job. There's no way he steps into such a perpetual mess right now. (And I am his biggest fan, and would be the happiest guy around if he was our coach.)

Watson Brown's inability to replace John Neal and other departed assistants with like talented coaches was the reason for the demise of his UAB career. Would Neal consider returning to a program that has virtually the same deficit of facilities it suffered from when he left? As you said, "John Neal is a smart guy", so the answer would seem to be obvious.

We are not looking for a head coach, so it doesn't matter if he would take the job or not.

RE: John Neal should be our next HC. - the Dragon - 12-02-2013 11:55 AM

Would he come to be our defensive coordinator? I don't know, but he might be willing to take the challenge. If we paid him very well, he might come because:

1. He may feel like he has unfinished business at UAB. He left in part over a spat with Watson Brown, but he loved it here. He might think he has an opportunity to bring back the defensive magic of old.

2. He has been in Oregon a long time, so he may be vested in their retirement system. He probably is close to vested in Alabama, so returning here for similar or better pay and coordinator status may be a good financial move.

3. His son lives here and is a UAB alumnus, so he would be able to be closer to his son.

Neal may not come, but I would call him. However, I'm not sure McGee would call him. McGee may have other guys in mind, and I understand that. McGee has to hire someone he feels he can work with, and he may not be comfortable hiring Neal. That is fine, but it is on him.

John Neal made $287,340 in 2013. Doubt if he would come here as the DC, with a pay cut. Bet he would come here as HC though.

He need to wait one more year and he can be HC with a nice salary

I think we should hire David Neal because he was a big fan of Pat Gray growing up.

He's the only losing head coach I would think about hiring.
