JFK - BCBronco - 11-22-2013 11:33 PM

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK. Whatever one's political leanings, his murder is one of the most horrific, sobering and memorable moments in American history.

Just watched a special narrated by Tom Brokow. The black and white film of the history of that era is riveting, stunning and sometimes sorrowful. Events including Vietnam, the bay of pigs, the civil rights movement, to a few years later, the murders of RFK and MLK, and the emergence of "hippies" LSD, the British music invasion, the counter culture movement, and free love, are nearly unmatched in American history.

The ongoing debate regarding conspiracies about his death are sometimes intriguing, often silly. I've heard the mob, the Cubans, LBJ, the CIA, the Russians, and of course, Oswald all being responsible. My money is on Oswald, but we'll likely never know.

I was never a huge Kennedy fan, nor a detractor, but even jaded Americans along with his admirers, must understand the iconic nature of his short presidency, his stunning death, and enduring legacy, even today.

I've watched and recorded pretty much everything that's on this week, most of it's old had to me, but then I've always been a junkie.

The most poignant statement I heard the other day was in the 24 Hours special where the documentary said that society looked at it as a failure of theirs, like we as a society failed and that bore out the assassination.

Betcha you wouldn't get that response these days.

A sense of responsibility is seen as a loser characteristic.

Ask not what I can do for my country.

Fifty years later and a lot of it is still too painful to relive-watch.

Still rings true today:

"My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

John F. Kennedy

They showed that clip last night, it's so powerful, so true, and even today so important. His establishment of the Peace Corps was a vehicle for young people to give back. He wasn't perfect, none are, but he captured the imagination of a nation.

I think JFK had key roles in two very important aspects of American culture and history.
1. Civil Rights
2. Space exploration and landing on the moon

I'm not sold that without the context they were derived he would have been out front on these but he recognized the opportunity, had a vision and the will to move forward in executing them.

Though directed specifically at beating the Russians I think this quote was truly elite:

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things. Not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”

Yes.

Only remaining question is, motive.

Thanks to Jack Ruby, we'll never know for sure.

Lone gunman, yes. Why and if he was alone? No idea. Ruby did his Harvey Keitel routine long before we ever heard of "The Wolf" or "The Cleaner".
