No trip for you this year girls.

Al Gore would be so proud. Along with Obama of course....

It’s hard to wave your spirit fingers when the city shuts down the cheerleading squad’s fundraising car wash to protect the environment.

This is what happened to Lincoln High School cheerleaders trying to raise money to attend a national competition in April. The San Jose Mercury reports that local environmental officials warned the high school cheerleaders that their car wash violated the city’s water discharge laws.

“We had a visit from the city of San Jose Environmental Services Department who said that the car washes at Hoover [Middle School] are in violation of water discharge laws, therefore we had to cancel this and all future car washes,” said an email that was sent out to neighborhood email lists on Oct. 18.

They don't seem to have a problem using water for their fountain at city hall

Unintended consequences at work.

I realize that's the photo the story used as well but somehow, I doubt those are high school cheerleaders. If it were the Lincoln cheerleaders, they certainly don't need the revenue for material for their uniforms.

My initial inclination was to think that the need for water conservation is not unusual in the West. But, they are talking about soap getting into the environment and harming wildlife.

And, yeah, if they have the money for silicon, I don't think they're in desperate need of raising money for activities.

At least they weren't trying to make a living like the Farmers who had their water turned off.

In 20 years, CA will be the most Conservative state in the Union.

Eh, they can have a car wash, just need to have it at another location. Problem is water going in a storm drain. No drain, no problemo.

Quote:The city also gave some tips on how they can have legally compliant cars washes.

The Mercury reports: “Conduct car washing over gravel, grassy area, or other earthen areas if possible… Ensure that wash water (soapy or not) does not run into a street, gutter, or storm drain… Wash water from paved areas should be collected and diverted either into the sanitary sewer system or a landscaped area… Use different methods to protect the storm drain system… Ensure no soap stains remain on the ground.”

Yep, sure have. I live in a free country but have to abide by "no outside fire" rules during the summer when things get really dry. I liken that to this car wash rule. They can wash all the cars they want, just do it away from a storm drain. Not really that big of a deal.

Someone from Texas might correct me but those look like Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders(the star necklace).

Yup, unless the only guy willing to let you do it is near a storm drain... or you want to wash you car and your property flows to a storm drain... or water your lawn and there's a storm drain... or flush your gutters, down the street from a storm drain.

No big deal, right? Free Country Smee Country. It's soap for crying out loud... not papermill chemicals that also go right into the rivers.

I bet if they were paying big taxes on the car wash, CA rules would make it ok to do it near a storm drain.

Someone from Texas might correct me but those look like Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders(the star necklace).

The colors suggest they are actually Texans cheerleaders.

That's what I what I was thinking. Definitely not high school though.

I'm actually against these sort of car washes on principle. Seems kind of short-sighted to be wasting the resource in this way. Now, if those who hold car washes can figure out a way to recapture the water and clean it for reuse, they should be allowed to go for it.

I do spray mine off once a month, and the soapy water goes into my yard. I use Windex rest of time and keep it pretty clean.

Good for you. Good thing the framers realized God gave you the right, and the people the right to do it anyway.

Here is why: The EPA is tying to tackle ground water contamination. It's killing fresh and saltwater wildlife and plant life. The EPA is actually fining people and companies 11k a day who do not filter and reclaim their water. Power washing included. That is why products like this are becoming so popular.
