This is the part that pertains more to ETSU:

If a new logo can play a role in ETSU finding 3,000 new students, why not consider a complete reboot of the brand and discuss a new nickname? Many students have mentioned it, and many more former students have scoffed at a Buccaneers nickname for a school 360 miles from the ocean and 1,600 feet above sea level.
Many schools had to change nicknames out of respect for native Americans, and the folks at Alabama, Arkansas and, most recently, Wake Forest would tell you Louisiana-Monroe has adapted fairly well.
Why not a nickname with something to do with area wildlife, culture or geography? Maybe Bears or Copperheads. Shoot, goats would be better. A goat used to be the mascot – Captain Billy the Kidd. Former ETSU player/goat farmer Big Tom Buchanan could get involved.
Mountaineers is spoken for, but moonshiners’ current popularity makes White Lightning enticing. Political correctness wouldn’t stand for that one, obviously, but something with local flavor would pack more punch in terms of regional pride.
No disrespect to those who were or are Bucs, but a nickname related to mountains, rivers or Appalachia – bluegrass music, perhaps – would be worth considering in this pivotal period.
A campaign considering nicknames, including those who wanted to stay with Buccaneers, would generate some buzz among the students. And this community might just very well be buzz-proof without the students being the bell cow.
That being said, a diverse range of folks have been complimentary of football coach Carl Torbush’s reach-out. His personality is resonating with people who, basically, haven’t devoted any serious thought to ETSU in years if not decades.
Of course, if the Bucs could land a few signees like McGue and Elizabethton’s Ethan Thomas in the early classes, it would not only spur interest, but help the Bucs/White Lightning make tailgating on Saturdays fun, too.

I have always thought that Buccaneer was an incredibly stupid nickname for ETSU- but I would be very opposed to switching it at this point.

RE: ETSU Bears??? - ETSU-07 - 09-16-2013 08:23 AM

How about the ETSU Bucks as in white tailed deer? It works for the NBA team and it wouldn't be a drastic change in how we are referenced. It may not be the most menacing of mascots but it makes more sense than buccaneers and it's way better than a smurf pirate.

RE: ETSU Bears??? - Buccaneerlover - 09-16-2013 09:06 AM

No.
The story is out there for the Buccaneer name came to be, and while there's a certain part of me that believes in new brand, new attitude mentality, don't change the nickname.
Trey must be desperate looking for story filler, though it wouldn't shock me AT ALL to see the logos overhauled again. The current designs are a reminder of a pretty hard reminder of an era of ETSU athletics that producted hard feelings, apathy and bad memories.

Get rid of the drowned smurf as a mascot but keep our name. Geez.

Of all the things broken in the ETSU athletic department...the nickname is not one of them... For those who care to dig a little.... the name is in reference to land Buccaneers who roamed the area...the story is described on every ETSU sports information stat sheet....so the media knows. I sure do miss Jerry Robertson's rendition of Bucky Buccaneer...I'm not a fan of the new one but that's a minor issue.

Sorry I forgot they did get rid of the drowned smurf, now they got the effeminate Musketeer.. not sure which is worse.

Jesus H,,,,,,,,,,of all the things. Go Bucs!!!!!

The nickname Bucs and the story that goes with it is fine. . . but that crazy blue mascot needs to go.

Noland has righted pretty much all wrongs except bringing Pepper the Parrot back.....
2015 with the return of football would be a good time to do that.

Marshall is known as "The Thundering Herd" and Marco is a bison. And there are no bison around this area. Thank god though we are getting ready to unveil a new Marco during homecoming on Oct 5th.

The Buc nick only works if the school and students make it work. To do that both the school and students have to embrace the nickname, to have pride in it.

This is the 1st two parts of Marco's makeover. It's cheesy I know but just to finally get rid of Scooby Doo on meth is worth it. No one has liked this Marco since it was brought out on homecoming in 2006.

The other mascot in the 2nd video is Beeper, he debuted in 1974 as a side kick to a long running children's program in WV known as "Mr Cartoon". When the man that played Mr Cartoon retired in 1995, Beeper was also retired. WSAZ the station that carried Mr Cartoon brought Beeper back a few years ago as WSAZs mascot. Beeper has never spoke a word, he just beeps his horn.

The doctor in the 2nd video is Dr. Allen Young. He was Marco in the early 90s. The pic of the earlier Marco is Young. He would come out dressed as an alien, a rocker, or even as a voodoo priest or death.

I prefer Marshall's name to be the "thundering nerds." I write that with the deepest respect. Marshall is what ETSU aspires to be. At the same time, I still think of the Nerds to be the Bucs rival.

Help Shape ETSU's Visual Identity

RE: ETSU Bears??? - etsudolfan - 10-12-2013 06:12 PM

They need to keep the blue and gold, maybe scale back the light blue a little and keep the black as an accent...the colors should not be primarily black and blue though IMO

RE: ETSU Bears??? - etsudolfan - 10-12-2013 06:15 PM

I think it looks a lot better without the black and light blue personally

RE: ETSU Bears??? - etsudolfan - 10-16-2013 10:27 AM

I saw the concepts for the new logos, I think they are eliminating the light blue and black and going back to the blue and gold. Bucky will likely be getting a little bit of a makeover, which isn't too bad...I like the current logo but he also reminds me of a Klingon....

ETSU Bears??? - ETSUfan1 - 10-16-2013 11:36 AM

Never understood why we used light blue anyway. It also frustrates me that we don't use old gold. Vegas gold and other shades are used.

RE: ETSU Bears??? - abuc90 - 10-16-2013 12:20 PM

You will see even less of the old gold.

RE: ETSU Bears??? - Bakline - 06-23-2015 02:38 AM

I hope that someone in the athletic department reads this.

ETSU Buccaneers makes absolutely no sense!

I'm a huge ETSU fan but the name doesn't really rally any regional pride from me, and I would imagine others feel the same.

The athletic department absolutely needs to do a little outreach and figure out weather the student body and community identify with the mascot. Personally, I find the buccaneers mascot laughable. (Again, I'm a die hard fan)

ETSU Bucks makes more sense to me. There are probably 1,000 other mascots that would be more identifiable for people of this region than a sea faring bandit.

RE: ETSU Bears??? - KDRBuc98 - 06-23-2015 02:06 PM

I said it's great to be a Buccanner! Go Bucs now and forever!!
