SK shot 2-5 including 1-3 from downtown. He did MUCH better today as USA beat UAR by 90. He had 18 joining 8 others in double figures..

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - Overrated - 07-07-2013 01:00 PM

I think if the United Arab Emirates would be let in the NCAA tournament they might have to play their first game on a Tuesday or Wednesday night in Dayton.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - rath v2.0 - 07-13-2013 12:56 PM

The last few games SK's shooting, particularly from behind the arc, has been rough.

FG 0-5. 3PT FG 0-4

FG 3-9. 3PT FG 2-6

FG 1-6. 3PT FG 0-4

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - BeerCat - 07-13-2013 01:31 PM

Yeah, his game looks exactly the same as last year, run around the 3 pt line and chuck up a bunch of 3's. He's going to have to do better for the Bearcats for UC to have any chance at a successful year.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - rath v2.0 - 07-13-2013 01:49 PM

Is it dementia, or do I recall SK having crazy skills going to the rim when he first got here? Sort of morphed into a 3 point specialist.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - Bearcatbdub - 07-14-2013 10:20 AM

Been watching team USA. Just not impressed with SK right now. I think he still has the ability to go to the rim and do it well. But like evreryone has said he just hangs outside the arc and chucks up 3's if he is even remotely open. I think he is a good shooter, but not a great shooter. He really needs to start putting it on the floor and getting to the rim and the line. Right now, he is not playin smart- plus the 3 pt line in international play is a foot and a half farther out.

Really impresses with the Heslip kid who plays for the Canadian team and plays college ball at Baylor. Automatic from three point range, but would put the ball on the floor and get to the rim when people overcommitted on defense. All this in the package of a six foot 2 white kid with no real athletic ability.

Who hit 30% of them??

Totally agree. Recall watching him his frosh and even sophomore years and thinking he's gonna have a great mix of hard drives to the goal and some threes mixed in when the D backs off him. That has somehow turned into much more three hunting than looking to get to the glass. He's not a good enough pure shooter to always be looking three. He's got the body and the skills to be that mix of driving guard with a decent enough outside shot to use at times. He should be thinking more: drive first, outside shot second. Instead of vice verse.

That 30 per cent figure from last year is slightly misleading. He shot 37 per cent as a freshman, and 37 per cent as a sophomore when his work rate within the offense doubled. Kila didn't forget how to shoot last year, but the kind of looks he got last year were much worse than they were in his first two years. Those two seasons were the best because Cash was healthy, or as healthy as Cash got plus Dion Dixon, for all his warts, could break down defenses at will when he wasn't jacking terrible 18 footers and off balance threes.

Those two could break down defenses on the bounce, force teams to collapse the paint and sag off shooters which yielded plenty of catch and shoot opportunities, of which SK was the main beneficiary. Last year Cash couldn't beat anyone off the bounce with consistency, because his quickness was long gone. SK was asked to make more and more plays, one on one, off the dribble, which has never really been his game. He is great attacking the rim in transition, and in semi transition situations. He is so big and strong with the ball that his lack of outright speed and quickness doesn't matter. In that half court thats where those deficiencies come into play, because the gaps are smaller and have to be hit faster. But if a defense is set he can't beat it off the bounce, and get to the rim with any consistency.

That has never been part of his game, he isn't quick enough to do that. So this year a larger proportion of his shots became contested jump shots off the bounce. No wonder his shooting percentages went down, that isn't his game. Far too often he was asked to bail out bad possessions by creating good shots for himself off the dribble, and that isn't something he will ever do with great efficiency. It isn't that he is suddenly a non shooter, its that no one was capible of setting him up with the kind of shots he excels at, there were simply no catch and shoot opportunities to be had.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - pobearman - 07-14-2013 06:17 PM

Most importantly, teams had to double Yancy in the post opening up shots for SK. Almost didn't have to single team our inside guys last year. He needs to use his strength to get to the basket.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - BearcatMan - 07-14-2013 07:44 PM

You're saying all of this...but I counter with the fact that he should've figured out what those defenses were doing and adapt his game to it. The fact that he would NEVER go to the hole after realizing that they were defending the 3-point line is a much more damning piece of evidence than his shooting percentage.

RE: Sean Kilpatrick & Team USA on ESPNU - QSECOFR - 07-17-2013 06:28 AM

Last year, we had NO inside scoring. New Mexico figured out that you could play 1 in and 4 out on defense and double everyone who touches the ball outside. We saw almost the exact same defense every game from that point forward. It is VERY hard to drive the hoop when you are doubled everytime you touch the ball.
