Tropical Storm Andrea - Tiki Owl - 06-05-2013 05:07 PM

Could be wet in the afternoon in Raleigh but on this track it looks like maybe a 7 or 8 pm (EDT) would be possible.

We're already having Tropical Storms? Seems early...

70% chance of rain from 8 pm Thursday through 4 pm Friday, according to Weather.com. Hard to imagine they'd be able to play (or have much of a crowd) very soon after such a drenching. But if the storm tracks just a little east of predictions, then rainfall in Raleigh would likely be much less.

Yes, it does! But, for what it's worth, NOAA is predicting an above average hurricane season:

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - CanadianOwl - 06-05-2013 09:45 PM

I can't say that I would be very sad if we didn't get to play until Saturday. Our guys could use the extra day.

Good to hear. Don't want to have this as the fallback: http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/060705aaa.html?pic=0

It is early. But it's about the same time the 2005 season started. Some of the storms from that season were Katrina and Rita.

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - MJY - 06-05-2013 10:25 PM

Hurricane season starts June 1. The day regionals started in 2008 (Rice beat Sam, maybe May 30 or 31), I got an injunction by convincing the judge that really bad stuff could happen if the defendant didn't fix the hazard he'd created and a hurricane hit.

This morning's model puts the center almost on Raleigh at 1pm Friday....yuck. Forecast based on the newest models:

Might be a long weekend.

Move the series to Houston!

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - Fort Bend Owl - 06-06-2013 06:10 AM

I bet you they make an early call to delay the series a day. It's not good news for those who are traveling there, but you have to be safe and if this sucker is still 45 mph when it crosses Raleigh, there might be some minor clean-up needed Friday late afternoon after the storm goes through. The weather should be fine by Saturday because she's moving along at a good clip.

We should know by the end of the day I imagine. If they're right on the path through the rest of the day, they'll probably err on the side of caution in case the projected path continues to be correct.

Ah, didn't know that.

If the center tracks towards Raleigh, the amount of moisture it drops is probably going to be less than some may think here. It will be over land for quite a while that point, with less chance to replenish itself from the Atlantic. It will certainly pull some in, but wouldn't be as much as if its track stayed more to the east.

Just going to have to watch and see. Safe travels for all heading in.

But the wind damage could be something to watch. Good point there.

EDIT: I take it back, I didn't realize the landfall was that close. Hadn't looked at the map yet. It's going to be able to keep charging itself as it goes through GA and SC, based on their expected tracks. Also means I'm looking at a mean evening here in Central Virginia around dinnertime. Most computer models appear to have it coming through my backyard, it would seem.

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - ColOwl - 06-06-2013 09:49 AM

Of course, if it causes delays at Raleigh, it'll cause the same delays at Chapel Hill. Current schedule is UNC-USC at 1:00 (EDT), Rice-NCSt at 4:00 and both LSU-OU and CSF-UCLA at 7:00. Given ESPN's pull, perhaps they would move the LSU game to the first slot and even put the West Coast game on at 4, which would only be 1 p.m. there. If we played at 7, they could even move the UNC game to at 10 p.m. start. I hear tell that the Tar Heels just loooooovvve those midnight games!

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - Ron Lafond - 06-06-2013 10:06 AM

I'm not a weatherman, but I'll cut and paste:

Hour by Hour Forecast

Heavy stuff ending right before scheduled first pitch, rain chances drop off quickly thereafter. Depends upon track, drainage, and if there's any damage to be cleaned up.

As someone else mentioned, switching first pitch to 7pm or 8pm would probably ensure the game gets in, all else being equal.

I know your comments were mostly tongue in cheek, but you can be assured that any decisions made concerning UNC-CHeat will be to their benefit.

John Skipper is the president of ESPN Inc. and co-chairman of Disney Media Networks. Skipper attended Lexington High School in Lexington, North Carolina. He then attended UNC-Chapel Hill and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature.

Just another reason (among many) to despise those #%@#$*

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - grol - 06-06-2013 01:04 PM

According to the radar it's raining in Raleigh now (1:00 PM Thursday). The tropical storm is on the Florida-Georgia border.

RE: Tropical Storm Andrea - WoodlandsOwl - 06-06-2013 01:21 PM

These ragged Tropical Storms are notorious rainmakers. Florida is getting soaked and it hasn't made landfall. The rainfall rate per hour is the wild card.

It is indeed raining here now, but it's not rain from Andrea yet (technically). It's a front that is getting pushed back north due to Andrea moving up. Rain from the tropical storm should start to hit us Friday morning.
