Conference Realignment - Chuck_A - 05-06-2013 05:20 PM

Oakland U. has invited media to their board of trustees' meeting on 5/7/13, presumably to announce their intent on leaving the Summit and joing the Horizon League.

I know some of you have probably heard rumors about the Horizon League's interest in NKU. What are you guy's feelings on this and the rumor of the HL's interest?

We only wish we were them.

In all seriousness, the hope for NKU fans is that the move to the ASun is a stepping stone in a fast climb to relevancy. Not necessarily national relevancy, which seems unreasonable, but local relevancy. Mostly UK and Cincy fans dominate the region, and Xavier gets some attention. If NKU can find a way to carve a fanbase that rivals X's, I would be thrilled.

But it will take several years to see if that's feasible. With the inane NCAA rule of a 4yr probation on postseason play, it kind of stunts the growth for now. -- of which I'm sure the Horizon took into account before deciding whether or not to invite NKU two years ago.

Getting an invite to a conference like the Horizon should be a goal for NKU's department.

Here's to hoping!

Has anybody at NKU heard anything about the Horizon League and Northern Kentucky?

Well this site is probably going to be a lot more dead now that the top school forums have left the conference. Anybody heard any new updates???

Make it undead.
Hopefully you guys get the Horizon League invite. Get out of the A-Sun as quickly as possible, and if that means mortgaging the president's house for a football program, do it.

I'm hoping the ASun can get things together and get some schools that want to be in tha ASun.
I don't know what they can do if they don't sponsor football though.
Go get 4-6 schools and add football.
Maybe you don't lose KSU too soon.
I would hope NKU wouldn't jump ship this soon.

The Florida core needs to stay together and get Palm Beach Atlantic, UWF, Florida Tech, North Alabama, West Georgia and perhaps Bellarmine and/or Trevecca Nazarene out of Nashville to move up. Overload the conference numbers wise so when teams do leave (as they tend to) you'll have a security blanket.
The A-Sun needs between 12-16 teams total, with one division being in Florida and the other schools can be in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Trevecca is in a tough spot. They have ended up in one of the roughest areas of Nashville, have little room for growth, and do not have a great reputation around town for hiring their graduates. Years ago, they were peers with Belmont and Lipscomb. Both schools are top 20 in regional universities (South). Trevecca is not ranked. A better replacement would be Union University out of Jackson, TN. They are the #14 regional school in the South. They are in the transition period to NCAA DII, though, so I don't know if they would be interested. Plus, Tennessee is filled with decent private, religious schools. They are better off staying together, even it that means it is not at the DI level.

Overall, I think the best long term plan for the A-Sun should be to abandon Kentucky and Tennessee once NKU and Lipscomb find new homes. The only public schools in both states at an A-Sun level are already in the SoCon (ETSU, UTC) or the OVC (primarily TN and KY schools).

Just revisiting this to say how much of a difference a couple years make. The Horizon League woke up and saw the potential of NKU and snatched them up before either the Summit League or the OVC. This past season '15-'16, their first in the HL, they represented very well. Not just in men's basketball, but across the board in all sports. NKU was the right fit at the right time!
