BIG XII Maybe Considering the AAC for Expansion - Underdog - 05-06-2013 07:22 AM

"If the Big 12 does decide that they want to expand, it will have to focus efforts on members of the American Athletic Conference, the former Big East that will end up housing many former members of Conference USA. With the departure of Louisville to the ACC, the number of appealing options for the Big 12 has never been lower.

Cincinnati is still on the table as a possibility, but otherwise the Big 12 would have to look into expanding into Florida or bringing back former members of the SWC like SMU or Houston.

Florida schools like Central Florida or South Florida would be appealing because they could help open up the fertile state of Florida to Big 12 recruiting efforts...."

You left out the line that USF and UCF aren't really viable TV/financial options.

Also, this is simply a speculative piece bemoaning the ACC GoR removing the best expansion candidates from the B12. No quotes from the B12 or anybody else.

I've read that along with Cincinnati that UConn is also a possible B12 candidate. UConn would provide that travel partner that West Virginia has been asking for.

I wasn't trying to quote the entire article, and you're entitled to your opinion about it.... If you look at it logically, the only other option the B12 has at expanding is the MWC. However, the better markets and recruiting are in the east, which gives the AAC a big advantage over the MWC. The B12 is an incomplete conference just based on its name and the amount of schools that it has. Moreover, not having a championship game makes it look even more incomplete when compared to the other power conferences.

It makes it sound like a natural fit would be UCF and USF in opposing divisions in the Big XII.

I don't want that, however. I would much rather remain in a conference like the AAC or former Big East. Playing half of our games in Texas doesn't sound like fun...

For your USF Bulls...you might be correct...however, you again show how little you know about UCF.

UCF is leaving a conf that had FOUR teams in Texas...plus another in Oklahoma. Even the AAC will have 2 teams in Texas plus another in Oklahoma.

Trading UTEP, Rice, Houston and SMU for Texas, Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor looks like a good trade-off in my opinion...let alone trading Tulsa for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

You mean like UCF was doing in CUSA for the past 7 seasons?

Not to mention the much higher payday!

RE: BIG XII Maybe Considering the AAC for Expansion - Bull - 05-06-2013 08:24 AM

Count me among those who would not be thrilled... yes I understand the $$$ and access improvements, and how great an 'upgrade' it would be... but I really think the AAC is going to be a fun conference.

That said, USF and UCF are as attractive and viabale candidates for the Big 12 as anyone else in this conference. Period. I won't bother getting into markets, school size, stadiums, recruiting, etc... as I don't want to get into an argument with my fellow conference mates. Any AAC school would be a good candidate for any of the Big 5 conferences.

RE: BIG XII Maybe Considering the AAC for Expansion - Attackcoog - 05-06-2013 08:26 AM

The article is speculative, but it's also pretty logical. Seems to me, the Big12 has said for some time they are happy at 10. When schools like Florida St, Miami, and Clemson were options, they seemed to be interested, but still hesitant to make a move. Absent those options, my guess is the Big12 is telling the truth when they say they are happy at 10. That sucks a little for W Virginia, but Im sure the 20 million a year and membership in an AQ conference will help them to deal with it.

lol a new low. When KL disagrees with your conference expansion opinion, your automatically a USF fan.

Very amusing as usual

The "travel partner that West Virginia has been asking for" is ECU:

At least that is what Chuck McGill who is a writer for the Charleston Daily Mail stated in one of his articles:

"(By the way, heard WVU Athletic Director Oliver Luck lobbied on behalf of ECU to get into the Big 12, which would have given the Mountaineers an Eastern Time zone partner in the league.)"

Agreed. Cincy is a much better candidate. While UCONN is a much better name brand, even ECU is a better candidate for an eastern add to appease WVU. UCONN is just too far away and would always be an island.

My opinion is that their choices are either stand pat or got to 14 like the SEC. I wager they stand pat.

I could see the B12 bypassing UC for ECU... I think that's a real possibility...

No doubt. UCF would happily jump at the chance. What school wouldn't?

I don't want that....

Realistically, I think it could be one or the other—not both. Consequently, here’s my BIG XII scenario:

Big West Division: Baylor, Oklahoma, OSU, Texas, TT, TCU

Big East Division: Cincinnati or ECU, Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, USF or UCF, WV

If the Big 12 adds two to go to 12 (and a championship game) than UConn and Cincinnati would BOTH be viable programs. The Big 12 is already in the east with West Virginia are BOTH programs are Big 12 quality ... or at least the two best options ... by far.

I'm cool with going back to the SWC
