MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - Gamecock - 04-25-2013 01:19 PM

Thoughts on whether or not this could happen and how it might help the MWC

RE: MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - Native Georgian - 04-25-2013 01:31 PM

It won't be a 1:1, but maybe a 2:1 or 3:2 or something like that.

Yeah. I think if the MWC can get 4 homes games a year from PAC 12 teams its a win.

RE: MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - UTEPDallas - 04-25-2013 01:50 PM

The Pac-12 is the only major conference that plays the MWC regularly in both football and basketball. I don't think the Pac-12 will agree on a schedule alliance with the MWC but it doesn't hurt to ask just in case.

Already play more than that every year.

This year, Fresno plays Colorado, Reno plays UCLA, Hawaii hosts SC, Boise plays Washington, SDSU hosts Washington, I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

I think Utah is hosting Utah State as well

RE: MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - johnbragg - 04-25-2013 02:06 PM

So, the PAC would use the MWC the way the Big Ten uses the MAC?

RE: MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - UTEPDallas - 04-25-2013 02:08 PM

Pac-12/MWC games this year (plus NMSU and Idaho):

Arizona @ UNLV
Colorado vs Colorado State in Denver
Fresno State at Colorado
Hawaii @ Oregon State
Oregon State @ San Diego State
San Jose State @ Stanford
Nevada @ UCLA
New Mexico State @ UCLA (not a MWC school but you get the idea)
USC @ Hawaii
Utah State @ USC
Utah State @ Utah
Utah @ BYU (what once was the MWC rivalry)
Boise State @ Washington
Idaho @ Washington State (they're only 8 miles apart)

That's 11 Pac-12/MWC games this year. 3 MWC schools are hosting, 7 are playing on Pac-12 stadiums and 1 is a neutral game in Denver.

Not necessarily. Both leagues are isolated from the rest of FBS conferences so it makes sense to play against each other. Unlike the Big Ten and MAC, the MWC has had some success against the Pac-12 with some years having a winning record vs them. But to be fair, that was when Utah, BYU and TCU were still in the conference.

... which means you don't need the conference offices dictating anything about scheduling; the schools are doing just fine scheduling each other as it is.

The idea of sharing a pool of officials for each sport, and maybe an administrator who assigns officials to each game and oversees the performance of officials, is a very good idea, and they ought to do something like that.

RE: MWC/PAC 12 Alliance - UTEPDallas - 04-25-2013 02:18 PM

Here's the 2014 schedules so far:

UNLV @ Arizona
Nevada @ Arizona
Arizona State @ New Mexico
Colorado vs Colorado State in Denver
Hawaii @ Colorado
Wyoming @ Oregon
Oregon State @ Hawaii
San Diego State @ Oregon State
Fresno State @ USC
Fresno State @ Utah
Washington @ Hawaii
Washington State @ Nevada

Colorado is playing at UMass which I found kinda odd.

EDIT: UTEP signed a home and home series with Arizona for 2017 and 2018 04-cheers Nice to see an old WAC rival back on the schedule.

Good idea to share referees as long as the rules are exactly the same between both leagues in all respects. I think the scheduling alliance is a great idea for all sports but football. In that case, I agree with others that a 2:1 or 3:1 would be beneficial to both leagues. I would rather see the PAC go forward with an 11 game round robin, though, if they are truly looking to beef up their strength of schedule. The PAC's biggest rivalries are with each other (outside Utah and Colorado), so the out of conference rivalries that are problematic for the SEC and ACC do not really effect the PAC.

The Pac-12 TV deal changed everything. Before that it was usual for a Pac-10 school to play 1 and 1's with the MWC and WAC. Now they have extra money so one and dones, 2-1 or even 3-1's will be the norm. Basketball will still be mostly 1 and 1's and the MWC has been the better basketball league the last few years.

That's the first game of a 2/1 series; the other two games in the series are in Boulder. But the matchup of teams doesn't make a lot of sense for either team, I agree.

I'd kind of think the impact of the new tv deal isn't even really into play yet.

It has. The Pac-10 used to be fair to the MWC and WAC about signing home and home deals. After expansion, their new TV deal and the death of the WAC, they're still playing MWC schools but it's now under their terms. Schools like Washington State have these extra $$$$ that they didn't have before so now they can demand a one and done or 2-1's instead of a home and home. I don't see basketball changing in that direction since there's more flexibility in scheduling OOC and it's not like the Pac-12 has been strong in hoops lately.

I knew it was a 2-1 but I found it odd those two schools are playing. It's not like the states of Colorado and Massachusetts offer tons of recruits for exposure purposes. Either Colorado is desperate or UMass needed the money so bad. Maybe it's both.

Right, and anything at Hawaii is really a home game for the PAC school (recruiting tool). That was a smart move that Bama did awhile ago when they were bowl ineligible.
