If CUSA gets UL-Lafayette and Ark St - blunderbuss - 04-09-2013 10:26 PM

Assuming they'd start CUSA play in 2014, the SBC would be down to 7 football members in the SBC for 2014.

Idaho, NMSU, GA St, Tx St, So Alabama, ULM, and Troy

Does that sound right for 2014? I'm just trying to figure out if they're going to have enough schools for that season.

When do you think CUSA would extend an invite and want them to join?

I think if this happens (and despite the recent articles I think its below 50/50 for happening) it doesn't take place til 2015.

Arkansas stAte, ULALA, Missouri State, Texas State, New Mexico State would be a good grouping for CUSA or the Sun Belt.

Depends on more realignment happening, but those schools could match up well. Heck, maybe pick up UNI, NDSU, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, UC-Davis, Portland State and you could have a good competitor to CUSA West and the MWC.

The new Southwest Conference?

Texas State
New Mexico State
U. of Louisiana - Lafayette
Arkansas State
Missouri State
U. of Northern Iowa
North Dakota State
U. of Montana
Montana State
U. of Idaho
UC Davis
Portland State

Ok so Ark st would win conference tittles every year with those teams! Lol...weak conference!

Ark st would rather go to the Mac than stay in a fcs move up sun belt!

I would rather drop football than leave the MVC to play basketball in that conference

Did I miss when Ark State won a BCS bowl or something?

That is a hideous grouping of schools...I'm sorry but way too many schools are making the jump. The Big Boy Schools should be held to around 100 in FB and 200 in Hoops. I used to think about 150 in Hoops but I think 200 could work too.

anything outside the big 4 and the ACC are hideous groupings

App. St. and Ga. So. play in 2014 and count but are not eligible for championship or a bowl. That makes 9 if ASU and UL were to leave which is more than the WAC had this last season.

That's incorrect. App State and GaSo will be championship eligible next year. We will be playing a full SBC schedule. Benson said that the team with the best record will host the championship game, and if App State had the best record, Boone would host the first SBC championship game. We will not be bowl eligible next year, but we will be championship eligible.

The MAC and Mountain West at least make sense.

Yes, as noted they are championship eligible in 2014, bowl eligible in 2015, which implies they complete their transition 1 August 2015 and can count toward the required 8 FBS schools to be an FBS conference.

There's a two year grace period, so being below eight full FBS schools from 1 July 2014 to 1 August 2015 wouldn't be fatal.

RE: If CUSA gets UL-Lafayette and Ark St - arkstfan - 04-10-2013 04:02 PM

NMSU and Idaho have no impact on the grace period. The grace period is for falling below 8 full members, they are not.

Yes, the grace period is for falling below eight full FBS members. Are you saying that NMSU and Idaho are not full FBS members?

Oh, wait, there's another sentence there:
Quote: An institution shall be included as one of the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least six men’s and eight women’s conference-sponsored sports, including men’s basketball and football and three women’s team sports including women’s basketball.

So its to guarantee the five FBS home games after all. Looking at some 2013 Sunbelt schedules, a lot of schools only have five home games, and make full use of the single FCS exception as well. ULL was already using NMSU to get to five.
