Should The Big East and The AAC play? - EPJr - 04-01-2013 01:14 PM

Should there be a challenge series for ole time sake?

No, the reason we left is because we didn't want to play those teams. We should try to work with Fox to get a challenge with another Fox property like the Pac-12.

Agreed, PAC-12 considering Fox owns their rights seem like the logical option.

I can go with Pac or Big XII challenge. ACC has the B1G and the old BE can still play against SEC.

Who's flaming now? Georgetown, Marquette, DePaul, Xavier, Providence, Villanova don't want to play Cincy or UCONN?

I don't think there is a problem with Cincy, UCONN, Memphis or Temple. It's your other conference mates...

It's not flaming when it's on our board. Also it's the truth, why do you think we left?

I think he meant as part of a challenge, not as individual games

I mean there is little desire to play those teams. SMU, Tulane, UCF, ECU, USF and Houston will do nothing for our RPI or SOS. They would want a home and home, if you're playing teams like that you want just home games. We didn't really schedule them in the past and I don't see that changing.

We so want to play DePaul

Lots more SMU's in that conference than DePaul's in ours.

We never really played before, why would we start now after the divorce?

The Big East should try to establish a challenge against one of the major conferences (i.e. PAC 12, Big 12, or SEC). That would bring the most visibility and probably offer the best match-ups.

If that is not possible, then what about a challenge against the West Coast Conference? The leagues could bill it as the best of the eastern private schools against the best of the western private schools. With each league having 10 members, you could do a complete top-to-bottom challenge.

Actually, believe all of the above teams would be an improvement (some a HUGE improvement) in RPI/SOS for St Johns vs the teams St Johns played this year ranked in the 200-300 RPI range like:

#204 DePaul (2 games)
#207 St Francis
#215 NC-Asheville
#226 South Carolina
#229 Fordham
#251 Holy Cross
#300 New Jersey Institute of Technology

1. USC was part of the SEC/Big East challenge. The year before we played UK.

2. Do you see the pattern with Fordham, Holy, Cross, St. Francis, NJIT? Local schools! How local is SMU, a 2 win team in a 1 bid league? They are warm up games. You want to be our warm up game?

I hope Louisville, Syracuse, Pittsburgh can still have a few of the NBE schools on the schedule in the future. Good luck going forward Guys. Great sharing games and times together.

SMU is a bit more local than say Univ San Francisco, a team with a losing record in whatever conf they belong in....yet RU traveled almost 3,000 miles to play that "USF" and got blown out by 16 pts.

RE: Should the nBE and the Conference (formerly known as the BE) play? - FriarTuck420 - 04-03-2013 11:03 AM

In terms of marketing, I think it would serve Fox and the Big East well to have a pre-season Big East tournament. "The Big East Alumni Tournament"
8 teams a year with a rotating entry.

You could choose between a bunch of different conference:

Big East - Proidence, DePaul, Nova, Georgetown, plus all current members

Other Big East (A12 or what ever)UCONN, Temple, USF, Cincinnati, plus everyone else in the league.

Big 12 - WVU, TCU

ACC - BC, Louisville, Syracuse, Virgina Tech, Miami, Notre Dame,

Big 10 - Rutgers

MWC - Boise, SDSU

If not a tournament then a Big East Alumni challange similar to the Big East/ SEC

The historical relavance of such a tournament would be network gold

You mean St. John's? Yes, they played the other USF on the road, because they were honoring Lavin's father who used to coach USF that night. Wanna try again?

RE: Should the nBE and the AAC play? - krux - 04-03-2013 10:15 PM

I like the preseason tournament idea. Call it the Big East Classic. First round match-ups are the same every year. Bring in all the "old" schools.

Louisville vs Marquette
Syracuse vs Georgetown
Pittsburgh vs Villanova
USF vs Miami
WVU vs Virginia Tech
Notre Dame vs Butler
Cincy vs Xavier
UConn vs Boston College
Providence vs Rutgers
Temple vs St. Johns
Seton Hall vs Depaul
Creighton vs Memphis???

Did I miss anybody? I guess you could rotate BYEs to even up the bracket...previous year's "final four" get a BYE...something like that

You left because your schools didn't want to play those schools as conference games. As a casual fan with no horse in this race, I would actually be interested in seeing an "Old vs New" challenge. I bet that such a challenge would be a ratings getter for several years just based on that angle. I understand why you would rather play a challenge with the Pac, but frankly there is little history there and I can believe the Pac schools would be openly asking why they are playing the BE.
