Why did we leave the A-Sun again? - YaleCamel - 03-25-2013 09:27 PM

Random question I have been thinking about recently as Florida Gulf Coast has been dancing at the ball and the clock seems stuck at 11:55... Why did we leave the A-Sun again? Maybe it is just a case of hindsight, but it appears that the A-Sun has been getting better and the Big South is getting worse (or appears to have more parity...). Heck, the A-Sun has a better conference RPI than the SoCon did at the end of the season. I'm just starting to wonder if it was worth it. I know it helps out with travel and "rivalry" games, but have we really gained that much in our return to the Big South? Just curious on others opinions, too.

As always... War Camel.

Big South is more stable of a league regardless of RPI. ETSU, Mercer, and Kennesaw State all being rumored as leaving and as soon as NKU is DI eligible they won't be far behind. Enough said.

I was an student athlete as an undergrad at Campbell during the A Sun years and I am a grad student right now at Campbell.

Realistically, the cost of the A-Sun was a lot for CU Athletics. Teams could probably spend up to $30K for a weekend in Nashville to play Belmont & Lipscomb (when Belmont was in the A-Sun). I agree that the A-Sun has stepped up competition but I think the Big South will catch on.

Speaking strictly about basketball: a lot of teams on both sides were either facing injuries or were younger teams. The league will quickly gain experience and be tougher to have a decisive winner. I also think the BSC teams will reach out and play other conferences to gain more experience on the big scale. I know that Liberty WBB played and lost to Baylor this season, but it was a great experience. Similarly, Campbell Men played great but tough teams and that will only help our team in the future.

I'm with you though, I'd love to see the BSC in general compete more on the big scale. Just keep the faith, we'll get there.

The ASun as a league still isn't that great. The ASun, Big South, SoCon, OVC are all pretty similar and more importantly, all one bid basketball leagues. The Big South makes far more sense from a geographic standpoint. It also saves a lot of money in travel, which has already been mentioned. When we moved conferences, we essentially bumped our budget up without increasing it, through travel savings. Theoretically this should translate to increased success on the field/court/pool/etc. the Big South is a good home. Also, with the trickle down effects of realignment, the ASun could become very unstable once again.
