RE: Laing Out - RedCamel - 03-11-2013 11:07 AM

I have also heard from a friend that read on twitter that Laing was out. I don't know where on twitter. I am sure there will be a write up later today. Now CU just need to put up the money to pay a good salary to get somebody here.

I wonder if the source is accurate and I wonder when they will make the announcement if it is true.

It's on Campbell's site. I don't think this comes as a shock to anybody who follows the team.

Campbell University statements regarding head men’s basketball coaching change

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The administration of Campbell University announced today that Robbie Laing will not return as head coach of the men’s basketball team.

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Bob Roller, Director of Athletics
“Robbie Laing helped transform Campbell basketball over the past decade into a team that was competitive on the court and exciting to watch. He led us from an old gymnasium into an outstanding arena, where we have become a hard team to beat with excellent fans and a great atmosphere. Coach Laing and his staff were tireless workers and promoters of the Campbell basketball brand, and we are forever grateful for their efforts.”

Dr. Jerry Wallace, University President
“Campbell University is grateful to Coach Robbie Laing for his years of hard work and leadership within our basketball program. Coach Laing was dedicated to Campbell University and our basketball program for over a decade. He led a successful transition for Campbell basketball into the Big South Conference in 2011, and we’re confident he paved the way for future program success. We wish Coach Laing nothing but the best in his future coaching opportunities.”

Very Nice guy, I hope he lands somewhere. He has a great staff I wonder if any of those guys will stay.

RE: Laing Out - Mr. X - 03-11-2013 04:35 PM

This is a sad sad day for the rest of the Big South, now playing Campbell in February isn't an automatic victory or a first round bye in the conference tournament. Over the last 3 years once February hit Campbell has record of 7-21. Those are all conference games but 2. Thats ABYSMAL! Somebody in another thread used the analogy he was like Ron Zook, I can see that recruits guys who individually can play basketball but he has no earthly idea how to build a TEAM or how to coach them. I have said this in other threads, he has no ability to progress kids along and make them better. Teams should get better as the year moves on but every team he has coached just gets worse. I hope everyone realizes the ONLY reason any of you even think he can coach is because J-Rod was here. He made Laing look like he knew what he was doing.

All Campbell has to do now is not hire another blind monkey, like Laing. Bring in a coach who understands X's and O's and how to actually get some improvement out of his players over the course of 4 years and someone who the players will respect and will want to play for. I know a lot of former players and trust me none of them are shedding a tear today. Campbell doesn't have to spend a ton of money to be good they just need someone with a little smarts and can build a cohesive team.

Hard to argue with this decision. Robbie is a great person and I'm sure he'll be able to find a job but its time for Roller to go out and find his guy.

Who do you guys think Roller's guy is? Either way I think the decision will be made after March Madness.

Can't say I'm surprised. I think it was a "put up or shut up" year for him. I wish him and his family the best and that he finds a good coaching job elsewhere. Maybe we can get "over the hump" now and further advance the program.

War Camel!

I am sad for Coach Laing and his family, but like has been said, it's a business. Should we have been able to go farther even with the loss of Darren? Yes, of course. However, I don't think that warrants saying Coach Laing doesn't understand basketball and is a "blind monkey." He has coached college basketball for many years and has brought our program to what it is now. You say he would be nothing without J-Rod, but J-Rod is just another example of the talent he has recruited to come here.

With that being said, I hope we get a good hire with a proven track record. I know I am being selfish but with the athleticism we have on our team, I hope the next coach employs an up-tempo offense and the ability to play strong, but scrappy, flying around, defense. Interested to see what kind of coach you guys think we need as well.
