Change in Attendance Numbers - Side Show Joe - 03-03-2013 11:24 AM

Many logical fans believe there is now little difference between C-USA, the MWC, and the no name conference. With all the shuffling in conference realignment, trends in attendance may begin to appear next season. Here are the attendance numbers I found for 2012.

How do you think the new line-ups will effect your school's attendance and that of each conference?

The New C-USA
West
UTEP 29,374
UTSA 29,226 -playing in the WAC
LA Tech 25,751 -playing in the WAC
Rice 20,325
Tulsa 20,020
UNT 18,927 -playing in the Sun Belt

East
USM 25,751
Marshall 24,896
MTSU 17,738 -playing in the Sun Belt
UAB 15,271
FIU 13,634 -playing in the Sun Belt
FAU 13,459 -playing in the Sun Belt

MWC
East
Boise St. 35,404
Air Force 32,015
New Mexico 22,307
Utah St. 20,054 -playing in the WAC
Wyoming 19,555
Colorado St. 19,250

West
Fresno St. 30,915
San Diego St. 30,227
Hawaii 30,031
Nevada 23,432
UNLV 15,208
San Jose St. 10,789 -playing in the WAC

No Name Conference
ECU 47,013 -playing in C-USA
USF 44,130
U Con 34,672
UCF 34,608 -playing in C-USA
Cinci 29,138
Houston 27,247 -playing in C-USA
Temple 26,580 -playing in the MAC
Memphis 24,371 -playing in C-USA
SMU 21,292 (we all know this number is fake) -playing in C-USA
Tulane 18,085 -playing in C-USA

RE: Change in Attendance Numbers - Cougar King - 03-03-2013 11:29 AM

ECU, UH and UCF have the 3 biggest fanbases and attendance numbers in the last 5 years and considering that MTSU, UNT, the Florida twins and La Tech all have horrific attendance, the drop off is pretty huge. That being said, UTSA is a good exchange attendance-wise and I wouldn't be surprised to see them draw in 40-60k range IF and I mean IF they keep improving.

UNT, LA Tech, and UTSA will have more regional conference games against teams our fans will come out to see. I think those numbers will all be going up.

When Houston came to UNT in 2011 we had an attendance of over 28,000.

Roughly 10,000 of those were Coogs. It was the grand opening of your stadium, that should have been an easy sell-out for you guys. -_-

I was there. Houston didn't bring 10,000 to that game. Maybe 3,000 UH fans at the game.

USM's attendance is way low, but considering we went 0-12, 26k is respectable. However we usually avg right around 30k.

Not going to question the fanbases of those three schools. Have always respected what you guys have done. That said I think you're going to see massive increases in UNT and MT's attendance. UNT finally gets some regionally friendly opponents.

And we were coming off a horrible season, lost the home opener and struggled to get the excitement back until it was too late in the year. From what I'm hearing from our athletic dept donations are way up, interest in season tickets is way up, and the excitement of playing our first C-USA schedule and having home games with ECU, Marshall, etc might surprise you just how much this is going to launch our fanbase and how much being in the Sun Belt was holding our attendance down.

UTEPs attendance is in the crapper, we have endured 7 straight losing seasons and still manage close to 30k. We were around 40k and up, a few years before that, when we were playing decent football. Many of us miner fans loved Mike Price as a person, but he was kept probably 4 years too long. I am really liking what I see with our new coach, and if he even gets us to a .500 record our attendance numbers should jump up pretty quickly. This school is a basketball school but we crave winning football just like any other Texas city.

I say this as respectful as possible -- as a UNT fan, please do not question our attendance. Like it's already been said, UNT couldn't even sell out their stadium opener against a team that got as high as #6 in the country.

That basically tells me there is hardly a situation (outside of UT, A&M, LSU, etc. playing you at Apogee, and selling it out for you) where UNT will have a sellout. Meanwhile, we sold our stadium out for basically 2 straight years between 2010-2011, and still had a respectable number for a (to put it bluntly) horrible team in 2012. UH has turned the corner when it comes to attendance, IMO.

I work with a few UTEP alums and they don't seem too concerned with the loss of Tulane and SMU. They all agree they will miss Houston. They are happy with the additions of UNT and LA Tech. Not so much UTSA. They think C-USA West will remain a solid division.

Yet we still got a new stadium before Houston... We will see how Houston's attendance looks after posting some bad seasons in the no name conference.

RE: Change in Attendance Numbers - BuzDawg73 - 03-03-2013 01:47 PM

Houston fans talking attendance smack. 27,000... Please. Aren't you a big school in big metropolitan area? Doesn't seem like you get much percentage of your market. Obviously, Tech's 25,00 shows a whole lot more penetration based on the size of our school and community. Houston's attendance doesn't even show up on the radar in your city. You do realize Houston's population is bigger than the population of the entire state of Louisiana. I would say you folks are really stinking it up in attendance.

RE: Change in Attendance Numbers - crawdad345 - 03-03-2013 02:03 PM

I think Marshall will see a small increase in attendance this year. We have Cato and most of the number six offense in the country returning this year. If the new DC can get our defense to anything near average we should see more wins and that will bring out more fans.

A new stadium at a fraction of the cost and capacity. We could of had a new 32k stadium years ago, if that was our ambition. It's not. If you look at my edit, I said "I say this as respectfully as I can". I wasn't meaning to troll UNT or anything, so save the "no name conference" stuff.

If we can get it together, and remain a top ~40 program like we've been the past few years, I think 30k can be our new minimum with a few sellouts/yr of 42k+ being possible.

to be honest your new conference is about to lose it's name and a new one has not been determined so the use of the term is not insulting it is reasonable.[/b]

Bahahahahahhahahaa. I went to the UNT/UH game, there wasn't more than 17K there and 3K were UNT fans. Yet announced was like 25K. Most of your sellouts weren't really sellouts either. You guys count tickets sold not butts in seats so have inflated numbers. 03-lmfao Furthermore, UH hasn't turned the corner in attendance, especially now because you've gotta convince students (the 30 that come) to find rides to Reliant to play such superstar regional opponents as UConn and whoever-the-hell-is-in-the-Big-Least-today.

What I'm saying is good luck.05-stirthepot
