Why not invite Gonzaga for Bsketball only? - PurpleReigns - 02-21-2013 07:44 PM

So I was thinking today that Gonzaga is too tough to handle in the WCC and that the only other conference they could possibly move to (since Pac-12 won't go hybrid) is the MWC.

Was wondering what the fans of MWC schools thought about this?

1- The MWC should invite them.

2- There's no way Gonzaga would want to be in the MWC.

I think thw MWC should invite all the good BB teams from the West. We could be the old Big East version of the west.

Not a wise idea, too many agendas going in. I like the route the Sun Belt has used in the pass. Add one or two basketball only schools and it'll be a happy camp.

Big East is going to be fine in the long run.

I think would be a great addition to the conference. But unfortunately Thompson said in mid January he is not interested in going beyond 11 basketball teams and that the league thought 20 conference games per season was too many.

That link doesn't work. And how do you get 20 games in a 12 team league? Divisions of 6 would give you 10 games and one game against the other side would put it at 16. Now a round robin with 11 teams puts you at 20, adding one would actually reduce the number of conference games.

Sorry the link posted didn't work but you can Google it. The interview with Thompson was January 16th to Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman. To quote: "Thompson said the conference will have 12 football-playing members for the 2013 season. He said the league is not interested in adding an additional basketball school. The Mountain West has 11 basketball-playing schools. Thompson said the "general consensus" is that 20 conference games in basketball are too many." Unquote.

Better ask someone else about the 20 game schedule but I understand the division breakdown only applies to football, not basketball. I also don't agree with Thompson and am all for adding the Zags anyway.

While it applies only to football you can go the C-USA route. Play each team in your FB division twice and then the rest once to have a total of 16 games.

A similar question was asked with Memphis basketball years ago. I wonder how that would have worked out for the MWC. Probably not so well.

That's where I see an advantage to adding a basketball school. In my opinion, it makes sense to do an east/west divisional split for basketball when you go to 12 or more playing as stated above. You can make an already strong basketball conference stronger and open up a few more dates for noncon games. Only problem with Gonzaga is that I'm not sure they'd be interested in joining a bunch of large public schools.

So you saying you want to join us and leave the MVC?

I'd be lying if I said Shocker fans wouldn't love that. With Creighton looking to leave, there's nobody left that excited WSU fans. And CU didn't excite us like the old rivalries we had with Tulsa, Louisville and Cincinnati way back when.

I do know that WSU has limited options but we're looking at them all to better position ourselves. Many of us admire the MWC for the basketball played. Schools like New Mexico, UNLV, SDSU, Utah State, Wyoming and Colorado State are a lot more intriguing than what we have.

And on top of basketball, it would be an upgrade for out baseball, volleyball and T&F programs. I'm sure golf would be pushed more as well. It'd be an easy call for us if the opportunity was there. I know it's a long shot but at least among the WSU faithful, the MWC would be our first choice.

But that's not why I was posting over here. I like the MWC and follow it from KS.

If we had an other sports school, I wouldn't mind you. I've heard of WSU since the 80s from the college world series, and would love to have your baseball along w/ basketball.

Sadly, our baseball has fallen a bit. The man who built the program is in the last couple years of his contract and many fans have been calling for his head over the past 4 or 5 years. Ever since he left for Oklahoma and then came back after a day or so things haven't been the same. We hope a transition to some younger blood can get the program back to competing for Omaha once again. We've made a number of trips there including winning it all in the late 80s and made it a number of times in the 90s but it's been rough lately.

I do hope we can find ourselves in a new conference in the future. One that can help our already strong programs stay at a high level and even improve. The MVC is full of programs that run on small budgets and for the most part, don't compete nationally. Ours have been built or are being built to be successful beyond the MVC. Those are our expectations.

Can't wait until March Madness gets here as I believe the MWC can make a lot of noise this year. I hope my beloved Shox pull their heads out and play like they did early on. Thankfully, we should get one of our starters back who's missed most of the season tonight. That should help us moving forward.
