We hardly knew ya, Mr. Lovett - Nellie - 02-08-2013 11:26 AM

I'm thinking of inquiring....

Chip Kelly hires John Lovett

Posted by: Pete Roussel on Friday February 8, 2013

Sources have informed CoachingSearch.com that Cincinnati Bearcats defensive backs coach John Lovett has accepted a position on Chip Kelly's staff in Philadelphia.

Lovett coached the defensive backs at Texas Tech in 2012. When Tommy Tuberville landed the head coaching job at Cincinnati, Lovett followed.

Lovett has recently coached with the Hartford Colonials (UFL). He was the defensive coordinator under Randy Shannon at Miami (FL) and worked for Butch Davis at North Carolina.

More to come...

Interesting. Hopefully Tubberville can fill that spot with a good young energetic recruiter.

Wish, but more than likely not even on the radar.

I'd look for someone that has some good experience and a strong recruiting background.

I understand the recruiting background dilemma, but you can't discount his on-field experience, which compares more than favorably with a majority of positional coaches nowadays.

Maybe he and Rick Minter can swap travel stories..
Just seems like an odd hire by Chip Kelly. Why wouldn't
your DB coach to have NFL experience?

The Head Coach has no NFL experience. Why should any of the assistants?

At least he waited until the LOI's were in before he bolted...

Which means nothing if you don't know how to coach em up...even less if you don't know recruiting.

From footballcoachscoop

"Cincinnati: Sources tell us that defensive backs coach John Lovett will join the Philadelphia Eagles staff. Also, we're told that Thomas Moore (D-III - OH) quarterbacks coach Vince Suriano will join the Cinci staff as director of high school relations."

Sweet. Anderson HS's former head coach. Has a ton of contacts with coaches in these parts. Great guy, too.

Also a member of the Ohio HS football HOF.

Yup. One season at Indiana State and one season as a glorified grad assistant at UC is not enough experience as a coach. I would love to see him come back at some point after at least a couple of years experience as a full time assistant at an FBS school. Going to Idaho is a good step in his progression as a coach.

Suriano is originally from the Ohio Valley area (Martins Ferry). Gotta think he would be helpful in us landing guys from the area, particularly Martins Ferry and Steubenville which usually produces some FBS talent every year or so. Obviously we landed a good one with Zach Collaros before.
