The University of Cincinnati overcame a 10-point deficit early in the second half and Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 points as the Bearcats turned back Rutgers, 62-54, before 11,024 fans Wednesday night at Fifth Third Arena.

No. 24 UC (17-4 overall, 5-3 in the Big East) has won four of its last five games. Rutgers (12-8, 3-6) has lost four in a row and five of its last six.

With just under 16 minutes to play, UC coach Mick Cronin got in point guard Cashmere Wright’s face on the bench after Cronin removed Wright from the game for an errant pass that resulted in a turnover. Wright talked back to Cronin, then got up and moved further down the bench.

Myles Mack scored 12 points to lead Rutgers, which committed 21 turnovers to 17 for UC. Cheikh Mbodj scored 10 points for UC. Justin Jackson scored seven points with seven rebounds and a season-high six blocked shots.

After trailing by eight at halftime, the Bearcats fell behind by 10 before Kilpatrick started to warm up, scoring eight straight points, six on a pair of treys. A Titus Rubles layup and two free throws by Ge’Lawn Guyn pulled the Bearcats within one at 36-35 with 14:49 to play.

They tied the score at 40-40 on two free throws by JaQuon Parker, who was fouled while attempting a layup on a fast break triggered by Mbodj’s blocked shot.

Wright returned to the game with 11:29 to play. Moments later, Kilpatrick gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game at 42-40 on Kilpatrick’s fast-break layup off a Rutgers turnover. With the score tied at 46-46, Wright drained a three-pointer for his first points of the game to give UC a 49-46 lead with 8:03 to play. The Bearcats never trailed again, leading by as many as nine in the final minute.

UC never led in the first half. The Bearcats missed their first seven shots and nine of their first 10 as they fell behind, 13-5, with 11:18 to play in the half. They recovered to get within three at 20-17 with 5:21 left, but the Scarlet Knights outscored them, 10-5, the rest of the way to take a 30-22 lead into intermission.

Wright picked up his second foul less than six minutes into the game and went to the bench. He did not play the rest of the half. Kilpatrick was unable to pick up the slack, managing only five points in the first half while making only one of five shots.

Rutgers, which made only 5-of-17 3-point shots in its 10-point loss to UC on Jan. 12, buried six in 10 attempts in the first half while UC made only two of 12. Both teams had trouble taking care of the ball. Rutgers committed 11 turnovers to 10 for UC.

Jerome Seagears scored 11 points in the first half for Rutgers, making three of his four shots from beyond the arc, but did not score again in the second half.

11K for an average Rutgers team on a weeknight? Making progress...my goal is for UC to average at least 10K for the OOC season and at least 12K for the conference season.

For UC, every win brings a sigh of relief
01/30/13 at 10:58pm by Bill Koch

There was a sense of relief from Mick Cronin and the UC players after Wednesday night after they had wiped out a 10-point lead and beat Rutgers, 62-54, in a game they were expected to win.

But at this point in the Big East season, every win comes with a sigh of relief, regardless of the opponent. Nothing is taken for granted.

“It was a great win,” Cronin said. “We had a lot of things going against us but we turned it around.”

The 24th-ranked Bearcats are now 17-4 overall, 5-3 in the Big East, and have won four of their last five. Rutgers (12-8, 3-6) has lost four in a row, its early-season euphoria having faded.

The story of the game was Justin Jackson, who played like he did when he burst on the scene as a freshman. He scored seven points with seven rebounds and a season-high six blocked shots and provided a mental lift that the lethargic clearly needed after they trailed by eight points at halftime.

Jackson was particularly happy with the six blocked shots. The junior forward is not known for his pithy post-game quotes, but when asked what it feels like to block a shot, he provided a chuckle for the media when he said it was “like getting a new pair of shoes.”

The Bearcats now move on to play Seton Hall on Saturday, bright and early at 11 a.m. in beautiful downtown Newark. This is another game the Bearcats need to win if they want to be one of the elite teams in the Big East.

“All I care about now is Seton Hall,” Cronin said. “That’s all that matters. Our position in the league, where we’re ranked, where we’re at this time of year, is all irrelevant to me. We’ve got to make sure we get rest and get ready for our next game. When they ring the bell you’ve got to be ready to come out playing on Saturday at 11 and if you’re not, you will lose.”

CINCINNATI — Rutgers was doing exactly what it wanted on defense, clamping down on Cincinnati’s guards. Even then, the Scarlet Knights still couldn’t contain Sean Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick scored 19 points and the 24th-ranked Bearcats intensified their defense in the second half, overcoming a 10-point deficit to beat Rutgers, 62-54, Wednesday night for a sweep of their season series.

Cincinnati (17-4, 5-3 Big East) blocked eight shots, forced 21 turnovers and held the Scarlet Knights to 24 points in the second half. The Bearcats also won at Rutgers, 68-58, on Jan. 12.

Myles Mack scored 15 points to lead the Scarlet Knights (12-8, 3-6), who have lost four in a row with an offense that can’t find any consistency. Wednesday night, they couldn’t hold onto the ball.

"When they turned their intensity and defensive pressure up, we didn’t have a response," Rutgers coach Mike Rice said. "We had a lot of turnovers."

Mack leads Big East guards in shooting percentage and averages a team-high 12.8 points, but had been in a shooting slump during the Scarlet Knights’ previous three losses. He was only 3 of 16 from 3-point
range during the three games.

"
When they turned their intensity and defensive pressure up, we didn't have a response.
"

He didn’t start Wednesday night, coming off the bench at the 14:33 mark. He had a steal and layup, four free throws and a 3-pointer that helped Rutgers hold a 30-22 lead at halftime.

The Bearcats trailed by 10 early in the second half and didn’t lead until Kilpatrick’s fastbreak layup put them ahead with 11 minutes left.

"When they needed it, they kind of looked to him," Rice said. "There were a couple of shots that he hit that I thought we had the shot challenged and we were there, but he was just better."

Point guard Cashmere Wright hit a 3-pointer — his only field goal — that put Cincinnati ahead to stay.

Justin Jackson had seven points, seven rebounds and six blocks for Cincinnati, giving the Bearcats a spark after they fell behind by double digits. The Scarlet Knights repeatedly drove toward the basket and tossed up soft shots that were swatted away.

"You can’t go off of one foot in this league and expect to get a layup," Rice said. "That just doesn’t happen. We’re going to have to work on that."

"Tonight we could have easily got beat," coach Mick Cronin said. "We could have easily gone down. And guys showed fortitude and dug in."

Cincinnati had eight days off following its 57-55 loss at Syracuse, giving Wright more time to recover from a sprained right knee. Wright missed one game and returned at Syracuse even though the knee wasn’t fully healed. He played 29 minutes and went only 2 of 13 from the field, missing seven of eight shots from behind the arc.

Wright started Wednesday night but picked up his second foul at the 16:07 mark and headed to the bench. He was limited to 20 minutes and finished with six points and three assists on 1-of-6 shooting. He also had three turnovers and exchanged words on the bench with Cronin during a timeout.

Kilpatrick has carried the offense while Wright was either sidelined or limited by the injury, averaging 23.5 points in the four games. He missed his first four shots last night, and the Bearcats’ offense bogged down again. He finished 5 of 13 from the field and 3 of 8 behind the arc.

"We started off sluggish, and that’s something we can’t do for the remainder of the season," Kilpatrick said. "As you see, it started off bad. That’s something we can’t get accustomed to."

Cincinnati missed its first nine shots from long range and opened the game only 2 of 13 from the field, helping Rutgers pull ahead 13-5. The Scarlet Knights never trailed, leading by as many as nine in the half.

Wright picked up his third foul only 53 seconds into the second half but stayed in the game. Wally Judge’s two free throws gave Rutgers its biggest lead, 32-22.

That’s when Kilpatrick asserted himself. He made a driving basket and a pair of 3s, helping the Bearcats cut the lead to 36-35 with 14:49 left. Kilpatrick got a loose ball and drove for a layup that gave Cincinnati its first lead, 42-40, with 11:06 to go.

Wright missed his first four shots, but made a long 3-pointer from the top of the arc that gave Cincinnati a 49-46 lead. The Bearcats never trailed again, finishing it off with 11 free throws down the stretch.

Rutgers Basketball Falls at No. 24/23 Cincinnati, 62-54
Bearcats use late rally to surge past Scarlet Knights

Posted on January 30, 2013 9:39:57 PM

Cincinnati, Ohio (January 30, 2013) – Despite a combined 37 points from the backcourt trio of Myles Mack (Paterson, N.J.), Jerome Seagears (Silver Spring, Md.) and Eli Carter (Paterson, N.J.), Rutgers dropped a 62-54 decision to No. 24/23 Cincinnati Wednesday night at Fifth Third Arena.

A late rally allowed the Bearcats to surge past the Scarlet Knights (12-8, 3-6), as UC outscored RU 40-24 in the second half. Rutgers hit just eight of its 26 second-half shots and committed 10 turnovers over the final 20 minutes.

“When they turned their intensity and defensive pressure up, we didn’t have a response,” said Rutgers head coach Mike Rice. “We had a lot of turnovers that led to their transition points and our lack of making field goals. Those things were critical to the game.”

Mack paced RU with 15 points, as Seagears and Carter each added 11. Cincinnati (17-4, 5-3) was paced by Sean Kilpatrick with 19 points and six rebounds. Cheikh Mbodj added 10 points for the Bearcats.

The Scarlet Knights started hot on both ends, scoring eight of the first 11 points and holding the Bearcats to 1-of-8 shooting from the floor while forcing three turnovers. Seagears hit a floater in the lane, a three pointer from the corner and junior Mike Poole (Rosedale, N.Y.) finished an 8-2 run with a trey from the top of the key to give RU a 16-7 lead with 10:01 to play in the first half.

After sustaining an 8-2 UC spurt, the Scarlet Knights built an eight-point halftime advantage, heading into the locker room with a 30-22 lead. Seagears and Mack combined for 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting over the first 20 minutes.

After Wally Judge (Washington, D.C.) scored four points early in the second half, Cincinnati ripped off a 14-6 run to take its first lead of the game, 42-40, at the 11:07 mark. Kadeem Jack (Queens, N.Y.) answered with a put-back lay-in, but UC’s Justin Jackson used two dunks to give the Bearcats a four-point cushion they would not relinquish.

For the second time this season, Rutgers and Cincinnati concluded a contest with identical shooting percentages. Tonight, both squads made 37.5 percent (18-of-48) of their field goal attempts.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when the Scarlet Knights host No. 12 Louisville at the RAC. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The contest will be televised live in high definition on MSG+.

I'll give Rutgers some props. Eli Carter, Myles Mack, Kadeem Jack, and Seagears are all sophomores and are pretty good. Carter and Mack lead the team in scoring.

They will be better in the coming years.

Agreed. Will enjoy watching them beat OSU in a couple years.

"For UC, every win brings a sigh of relief"

this is an appropriate title for UC games....at the end of EVERY game every fan takes a huge breath and wipes the brow....and from what I've seen, Mick does this too as he's walking over to shake the opposing coach's hand. lol

Quote:“It was a great win,” Cronin said. “We had a lot of things going against us but we turned it around.”

This is my one complaint about Mick. You can’t call that a great win. A great win is blowing out a bad team at home. Mick is settling for wins which will come back to bite him come tournament time. You aren’t going to win 4 or 5 straight games in the NCAA tourney by squeaking out victories due to your bad offense. Eventually you’ll get burned.

Mick promised us all summer a fast pace high tempo offense. Instead we've gotten slow down slug fests. When UC finally pushed the tempo in the 2nd half they scored some points. Why can't he try to push the pace more.

I agree that we started to score when we pushed the pace, but I think part of that had to do specifically with our intensity on defense. When the intensity picked up, our defense improved, and we looked much better.

This is a bad fast break team, IMO. They don't appear to finish well when they've got the ball and they're flying down court towards the basket.

RE: UC Bearcats rally past Rutgers - ctipton - 01-31-2013 01:28 PM

A "great win" is any league win, home or away.

I'm with Ctip, any conference win is a great win from here on out. You may not like our style, but it has been pretty damn successful over the last few seasons. Are we a championship contender? Probably not, but to me that is a personnel thing, not a coaching thing. As a college coach once told me, "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t." We are quite "chicken s**t" on offense but we don't have any pure scorers where the top teams have two usually.

I also think it's time for folks to realize that college basketball is a slugfest. This is not the NBA, defenders can get away with a ton of contact compared to the NBA. Allowing that type of contact makes scoring 80 points extremely difficult. It is not just a UC thing, it's a college basketball thing.

RE: UC Bearcats rally past Rutgers - rath v2.0 - 01-31-2013 08:50 PM

It was a great win in the sense that they got punched in the mouth by a team that brought more energy out of the gate and was shooting out of their minds....they could have rolled over but instead came out of the locker room loaded for bear. Wasn't pretty but they showed some stones.

This

and for the record I don't care what Mick promised in the summer (up tempo) etc. Fast, slow, pretty, ugly...I don't care as long as we win. We are winning and we are ranked. Enjoy the ride folks.

Cash is still not 100%. I think his shooting will come back to form once he gets his legs back under him and our scoring will improve.

RE: UC Bearcats rally past Rutgers - Bearcat_Bounce - 01-31-2013 10:30 PM

I don't care how many points they score, to me stats like adjusted offense are much more telling, Cincinnati is currently #56 in adjusted offense and #72 in offensive efficiency at 1.034 points per possession (FWIW they were at 1.025 last year).

Other related stats: UC is #85 in first half points but #37 in second half point which shows that they either start off horribly, or if you want to go positive...they wear teams down.

Cincinnati is also #224 in percentage of points scored from 2 point field goals and #206 in percentage of points scored from FT's showing how much they rely on the three point field goal.

They are #13 in road point margin of victory at +9.0, which shows how good of a road team (they are in the 30's in home margin).

Just some random stats I felt like pulling...

Geez. Make them drink 2 or 3 Monster Energy Drinks before the game, and play a scrimmage in the practice facility for like 10 minutes, if the game is at The Shoe. LOL.

Gotta think of something to wake this team up and have them in gear.

11 a.m. start time? Yikes. These guys won't wake up until about 5 minutes left in the game.

Mick addressed this on his weekly tv show last night. He said they'd be practicing early Friday - and for the first time ever, he's going to allow the team bus to blare music on the drive from the hotel to the arena on Sat morning. Plus he's letting them blare more music in the locker room once they're there.
