"Apparently, the GSU AD let it spill yesterday that the conference is having a secret meeting tomorrow about voting on prospective new members.

Those are:
Mercer,
Richmond,
UNCW

And an additional two I have heard are Kennesaw and ETSU. They are going after three spots now."

Can't see Richmond leaving the A-10/CAA for the SoCon or UNCW leaving the CAA for the SC with CofC coming to
the CAA.

Richmond is supposedly wanting to be an affiliate member according to the message board posts...either way I find the timing of this meeting very interesting.
1.) SGA vote today
2.) Football decision expected to be announced in 2-4 weeks
3.) SoCon commish had originally stated they wouldn't be adding any teams this year (and they still may not, this may be about the subsequent yrs) but now they are meeting to discuss additions and ETSU's name comes up

I just cant see Richmond wanting to join the SoCon. That would be a huge drop for them.

A-10 bball/CAA football. Thats about as good as a mid major school can do. I dont see them even considering a move to the SoCon.

I'm all for the SoCon adding ETSU, Mercer, and Kenessaw State. Need to keep a presence in Georgia with a large state school in case Ga Southern goes Sun Belt. Need another state TN school to go with UTC, while Mercer provides some private school balance.

I can slightly see UNCW looking at the SoCon, but since CofC is leaving, probably not. Richmond would be great, but they have moved up and the SoCon would be a big drop. Hopefully we can get our spot soon!

ETSU VMI and Mercer. My prediction.

Virginia Military! Where did that one come from?

Tell us your logic, Mr. 90!

I know The Citadel would like them back.

The question is if VMI is willing to improve their athletic dept. to the point where it would be competitive in the SoCon.

probably not. vmi would not be my first choice. but then again, they are not asking me...

Everytime I hear of VMI, I think of that scene in "Gods and Generals" where Stonewall Jackson is preparing them for the Civil War. They definitely have a lot of history!

RE: SoCon set to "get specific" on additions - Mister Consistency - 01-29-2013 11:18 AM

The only way I can see Richmond jumping ship is if they think the A-10 is about to get hammered when the Big East splits and the Catholic Seven form a new basketball conference. Not just Butler and Xavier, but Dayton and Saint Louis, maybe even VCU or G-Wash. That much in the way of losses could leave their relationship with the A-10 untenable (no pun intended).

That said, Richmond would be a huge coup for the SoCon. Hopefully we get to play there with them...

well they could always stay in the A-10 for all other sports and switch to SoCon for football....even that is still a little puzzling because CAA is a pretty solid conference

Wow look how even talking seriously of football gets you back on the map. Fantastic.

would much rather see us in the OVC but I doubt that will happen. SoCon makes the most sense
