Tigers go up by ~15, lead gradually shrinks, Memphis ends up winning by ~11, the fans are discouraged and angry.

Tigers go down by ~15, deficit gradually shrinks, Memphis ends up winning by ~11, the fans are encouraged and happy.

Just win baby?

Makes no sense. If we blow a big lead and win by 11, people get mad. If we dig a big hole, climb out and win by 11, people are happy. Ignored is that we played well to build up the big lead, and that we played poorly to dig the big hole.

What you get are 2 games against similar opponents with the exact same end result, both with one great half and one poor half, yet polar opposite reactions from the fan base.

I just want to win, don't really care by how many...but will admit I got a little greedy last night and told anothertigerfan that I wanted to win by double digits, thankfully we did. Between the close games this season and d.j. hitting the floor hard as many times as he does, I have aged a good 5 years this season. Lord, d.j. is on twitter saying he only has 6 more games at the FEF to play as a tiger....reality check smack in the face. 03-weeping

I don't know, I've seen pretty much the same response from people. Many aren't happy with either scenario (and many are happy with both). Even on this board.

I think the reason is that the former situation implies a failure to maintain focus (not that I agree), while the latter shows resilience and the ability to maintain focus.

I'm one of those happy with a win, no matter how you get it. That's all that matters, in the end.

Look great and win, Look terrible and win, Look superior athletes and win, Look outmanned and win. Makes not difference, just win.

Not really happy with either game. No way we should be down 15 to Tulane at home ever. No way we should, after being up 20, be getting outscored 30-8 over about 10 minutes of play against Harvard. I don't care that either team is OK if you squint at them right.

But both were wins in the end. At least coming back from 15 down showed some character.

Just win

It was funny reading the tweets of all the snarky Memphis sports media last night.

Dudes were loading up for bear when we were down in the first half. The snark trailed off as the night wore on.

#1 Duke losing 42-19 at half. It happens.

It's at Miami. Who's ranked, and has an RPI of 4. Tulane's RPI is 143.

Regarding Tulane.

It's a win.

It wasn't a bad loss.

That's two positives to take away from that game.

If there's one thing I've learned in all my years of watching college basketball, it's that forty minutes is a HELLUVA long time to play at any kind of consistent tempo. There are ups and downs, ebb and flow, and teams go on runs, or have repeated tired/lazy turnovers, or get on a hot shooting streak or can't buy a basket, whatever.

I feel confident that if you pit any of Pastner's teams against any other college team in the country for TEN minutes, we'd win. Ten minutes was all it took to run Louisville back to Louisville. Unfortunately, we have to play for FORTY minutes, and even with a deep bench, that's asking a lot of these young athletes.

Conditioning and athletic ability and basketball skills mean a lot, of course, but so does FOCUS. "Tenacity" is a good word to apply to a team who plays for forty full minutes, win or lose.
