Some student camp out trivia - Memphis Blazer - 01-11-2013 01:59 PM

1. What year was the first camp out?
2. What was the first few camp outs called?
3. Other than Memphis, what other games have there been camp outs for?
4. At one campout, participants watched a basketball game. What game was it?

I'm probably completely wrong.

1. 2005.

2. Anderson Alley

3. UTEP and Cincinatti?

4. Alabama vs. UAB in the NIT.

1 and 2 are right. 3. is wrong. 4 may be right, but I was thinking of another game. They may have shown more than one.

Did our women's team play on TV for one campout?

On second thought I believe it was Depaul, not Cincy. What an odd campout that was.

Also, we camped out for Southern Miss once.

Would they have camped out for the North Carolina NIT game?

RE: Some student camp out trivia - Blazer85 - 01-11-2013 02:24 PM

Pretty sure the game shown was UAB vs Kentucky from the 2004 NCAAs.

Well, we definitely watched UAB beat Alabama in the NIT because it was the first time I had seen anything but the end of the game. It was projected outside of Bartow.

The game I remember being reported was the 2004 UAB-Kentucky game, but there were other games shown as well, so Alabama makes sense.

The other game I recall there being a campout for was Louisville. It was one of the first, if not the first campout. I seem to recall there being two campouts in 2005. One for Memphis and one for Louisville. I don't think there was a campout for North Carolina and I don't recall any others being mentioned.

There was most definitely a campout for Depaul's return to Bartow Arena. It was a Saturday afternoon and they had a Friday campout for it.

I remember it because only about 7-10 of us were brave enough to stay out there and freeze our butts off. A football player camped out with us and shared stories of how bad the discipline had gotten and how much Watson Brown let the football players get away with.

I also remember us having a campout for Southern Miss.

When I went to campouts (post-Anderson), they were called Bartow Boulevard. I don't know what they call them now.

Here is another trivia question?

Who named it Anderson Alley?

Surpring answer found in this thread from 2005

I thought the first campout was for Memphis and then Louisville. I don't remember the exact order but I was at the first ones. I know we had several the following year.

What is a "camp out"? (LOL) Where would we have done that in 1972 and why?

RE: Some student camp out trivia - the_blazerman - 01-11-2013 02:46 PM

6) Who brought the weed? (just kidding guys)

RE: Some student camp out trivia - Memphis Blazer - 01-11-2013 02:52 PM

Here is the birth of the campout.

Cool to see the plan develop?

Another planning stage thread.

According to this thread, I came up with the Anderson Alley name.

The Memphis camp out I remember was a complete disaster. We all got there and set up tents(we did have a great time that night for what that's worth) and were given wrist bands around 7 am. When it came time to let us in the arena first, the staff did a terrible job. They should have opened a separate door and allowed only those with wrist bands in first, as we were promised throughout the night, but they didn't. Instead, a large crowd gathered at the door and they just chose to do nothing for the people who had camped out. I was pretty bitter because I attended most games at that point, but at least I was able to get in. It was a great idea if they would have just went through with what they had said they were going to do. I hate to think that some people who camped out may not have gotten in that game.

Haha, I got a black eye at that event! Good thing paint covers it well. The staff threw towels and crap into a mob, not very smart. The ESPN cameras goading students at the gate wasn't a good idea either.
