Tigers thread...2013 edition - EA3 - 01-11-2013 12:27 PM

Just got done reading Jerry Crasnick's recent article about free agents...

"Where could Soriano land? Detroit keeps making the rounds in speculation because: (A) Boras has a history of striking deals with owner Mike Ilitch and general manager Dave Dombrowski; and (B) the Tigers are a team with legitimate world championship aspirations and no established closer. At the winter meetings in December, Dombrowski said the Tigers are comfortable with the idea of giving rookie Bruce Rondon first crack at the job because they have Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke as potential security blankets.

"The reality is this guy is a very talented individual. I feel as good with his opportunity as any young pitcher I've ever had coming in to get it done," Dombrowski said of Rondon. But Rondon is 22 years old, has weight issues and has pitched only 29 2/3 innings above Class A ball. If he needs more growth time in the minors, that doesn't bode well for manager Jim Leyland's tobacco consumption."

I like Rondon...but I'd be fibbing if I said the Tigers' closer situation didn't worry me greatly.

Officially bummed. Soriano signed with the Nationals for 2 years and 28 mill....team option for year 3 at same price.

Not sure what they are going to do with Storen, Clippard and Soriano. All 3 are legit closers IMO.

I'm ok with this. Let's give Rondon a shot.

Best news I've heard in a long time....MLB is looking into banning the "third to first fake" move.

I absolutely hate when pitchers do that.

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - thegeneral - 01-28-2013 01:11 PM

I thought it was official they were going to do that. Jim Price always said last season was the last year you'd be able to see it.

What are they banning though? What if you fake to third then don't throw to first? What if you fake to third, the runner on first takes off, then can you not throw to first?

I thought I had read that it was banned too. Googled it and saw that they were "talking" about it. And now I googled it again and Yahoo says it's banned. I'm going with that. Move is now illegal.

Not sure of the logistics though.

there's some stipulation where you can still do it, but it would be completely ineffective because it would slow the move down so much.

I don't like this change. It's part of the game.

^ Me too. Scherzer picked a guy off with it last year (or the year before).

Twice. He is pissed about it. http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130126/SPORTS0104/301260391/Tigers-pitcher-Max-Scherzer-s-pickoff-move-now-balk-his-dismay?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|s

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - DesertBronco - 01-28-2013 11:43 PM

He was known for that on Arizona too. I think it sucks, Royals started doing that in the late 70's, made it fun.

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - EA3 - 01-29-2013 07:40 AM

Sherzer is literally the only person I've ever seen make that play work. That includes little league.

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - SilentStryk09 - 01-29-2013 09:02 AM

i had it work once playing Little League. Was playing 1st and called for the pitcher to do it. worked wonderfully, and threw the kid at third out at home when he tried to run on it

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - DesertBronco - 01-29-2013 10:58 AM

I've seen it work quite often, but then I watch baseball.

I don't think "often" would be the best description of whether or not it was successful.

My problem is that it's mainly used as a "time out" for pitchers when they weren't comfortable or needed to collect their thoughts. That and the fact that lefties can't replicate the move.

RE: Tigers thread...2013 edition - EA3 - 01-29-2013 11:23 AM

Interesting take from baseball prospectus in May of 2012. Calculates the odds of a fake to third throw to first pickoff working as "about once per month".

That's not bad. Much better than I had originally thought. I was thinking twice per year.

well, lefties have a huge advantage throwing to first, so I don't think that's a big deal.

Lefty pitchers can't even attempt the move. You are correct, that it likely isn't a big deal though.

You DO know there is baseball other than MLB right?
