Bearcats/Bengals and the airwaves - Cat-Man - 01-02-2013 10:29 AM

No earth shattering new information here. Just some comments on Mo Egger's chat on his blog this morning:

Comment From Bad Teeth
If I gave you a UC final four appearance but in exchange you had to give me a Bengals lose onus day, do you do it?

Mo Egger:
As a fan, yes. UC hoops is my favorite team to root for.

As a radio host, no. No team drives audience participation like the Bengals. The Bearcats barely move the meter.

Comment From Mike
When you say UC doesn't move the meter, what does that mean?

Mo Egger:
It means that our ratings are higher when the Bengals are in season, and much better when they're good. We get more calls on the Bengals than any other entity in town.

College basketball in general doesn't generate as much audience participation. I hear from UC fans, for the most part, after Bearcat losses, or when there's a topic involving another school. It used to frustrate me, now I just deal with it and move on to topics our audience reacts to.

RE: Bearcats/Bengals and the airwaves - bearcatlawjd - 01-02-2013 10:40 AM

The NFL and football in general is king. College basketball doesn't exist for most sports fans until the Super Bowl is over. Baseball season only competes with football during the draft week in April and in the last few weeks of the season.

I think most Bearcat fans have found other media outlets to discuss UC sports.

People would rather complain about the stupidity of the Bengals
than the success of the Bearcats.

This.

If you listen to Bengal telephone calls on the airwaves, they usually are the same calls repeated over and over again:

1. Some fan complaining about Mike Brown or the coaches (fill in the blank to the given year for the appropriate coach Shula/Coslet/Lebeau/Marvin and the coordinators).
2. Some fan wondering whether this will be the year they either make the playoffs or win a playoff game (this year)
3. Some fan calling in saying Kenny Anderson should be in the Hall of Fame.
4. Some fan calling in just to say “Who Dey”.
5. Not so much anymore, but for about a decade UC talk radio was littered with calls for Boomer to come back.

This in a nutshell is every Bengal call. The rest of the time is Mo, Lance, Dave Lapham, et al. talking to each other. Lance will bring up yearly topic of “Who went to the Freezer Bowl” or rehash the Bengal/49ers Super Bowl games to generate different discussion but this is basically it. Frankly, I find Bengal talk to be very boring.

And for 95% of the time, it's been this for the last 20 years or so.

For a while Cincinnati sports radio was that plus Huggins-Nancy, Pete Rose, Reds in the sub-central, and high school sports. We now have moved on with most of these topics leaving the airwaves free to discuss the Bengals all day.

RE: Bearcats/Bengals and the airwaves - nachoman91 - 01-02-2013 11:32 AM

Cincinnati isn't exactly an anomoly. This is normal (on average) for any talk radio show in the country. Pro sports moves the needle more than college sports unless you're in a specific part of the country with no close pro sports teams and a rabid college team in town (i.e. some SEC & Big12 areas).

RE: Bearcats/Bengals and the airwaves - CliftonAve - 01-02-2013 11:49 AM

Pittsburgh actually balances it out pretty well. Despite having the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates in town, they have dedicated programing for college football for two hours each day. In addition they have lengthy pre-game and post-game coverage of Pitt football/basketball on their flagship station.

Just curious, do the fans on here, who seem very passionate about local sports radio, ever actually call in to these shows. I rarely listen to these shows but it seems to me posting on the internet about it isn't the way to fix it if you really think its a problem.

I have called in like twice in my life, generally when something that is said really annoys me. That said, the callers are my least favorite part of sports talk radio, as I find most the callers to not add much of value. I like listening to a good host, and I live the people they bring on the show.

100% agree. The people that call in usually sound like complete morons. I enjoy formats like mike and mike or Scott van pelt where two hosts go back forth. One host just seems to get redundant and boring very quickly. Though I did listen to gamble this morning and I probably will stick with that in the am.

What Mark said. I don't want to hear what Joe in Oakley has to say about UC. Give me guests and people in the know.

99% of calls are terrible, no matter what they're talking about

Careful what you wish for. If UC callers were more frequent it would be
1. Nancy is a B, Huggs should still be here.
2. Kelly is a jerk for leaving before the bowl!
3. Fan attendance and support is lousy.
4. we're doomed without the ACC
5. Nippert and 5/3 are dumps

Most of us have jobs. Many callers do not.

If you listen to the people calling as opposed to what they want to talk about, you'll find that sports talk radio callers:

A. Skew a lot older than the average resident
B. Skew a lot less educated than the average resident (I know it's not scientific, but listen to the average caller for lack of proper grammar when speaking, overuse of invented or improper contractions, use of double negatives, etc.)
C. Skew a lot more rural than the average resident (again, not scientific, but listen to the accents you hear on callers)

What you're listening to is the segment of the population that probably isn't online and active in online sports discussions, isn't on twitter, etc. Online communities like this, where you can get dedicated UC talk 24/7, have killed call-in sports radio (and call-in political radio too, for that matter). Most educated, working, dedicated fans aren't going to make time to listen and call-in to a radio show when they can hop online and pound out a few thoughts on the keyboard about their topic of choice.

The caliber of callers drops as a consequence, and you're left talking to an audience that has no other outlet and (generally) falls to the lowest-common denominator in terms of interest and intelligence level. Ergo: your average Bengals fan.

I am surprised people actually listen to talk radio. I hardly ever do and no one I know does either.

In the limited amount of UC talk we do get, that's pretty much what the show hosts talk about. That and "UC fans are upset that OSU will be using Paul Brown Stadium".

I listen to talk radio fairly extensively when I'm driving. Though, my shows of choice tend to be national and very low-caller volume (ex: Opie & Anthony on XM in the mornings).

Low Information Callers??? Just sayin...
