Memphis friends: NYE suggestions? - TUBballJunkie - 12-03-2012 10:48 AM

We made the LB trip in 2005 and did Beale St for NYE, and will also be out there the night before the game this year.

Looking for some different ideas for the evening after the game...nice dinner, bars that are off Beale Street and a little more chill (less drinks in punchbowls, more microbrews/good wine)

We did the most recommended moderately priced restaurants last time around too, but didn't pay much attention to other options.

Any ideas are much appreciated! 04-cheers

Flying Saucer...I have no idea what they do for NYE, but their beer selection is amazing.

Ooh, I've been to one of those in another city! Thanks!

Silky O' Sullivans was a good time in 94, 95, 08 and 09

The Brass Door is a pretty cool spot downtown that's not on Beale.

As a UFO member at the Nashville Flying Saucer I wholeheartedly endorse this recommendation. :drinky2::aliens:

We'll prob pop in there on the 30th and say hi to the goats. We were there for part of NYE in 2005. 04-cheers

Of course there's the Saucer...I would also recommend checking out the rooftop of the Peabody Hotel...another thing away from downtown *might* be the restaurant at the top of the Clark Tower (can't give an opinion either way on that one, just thinking away from downtown).

Lots of restaurants have quieter NYE set ups...but they're usually overpriced and limited menu (a la Valentine's Day), IMHO.

I'll be home with the kiddos, so drink 1 or 5 for me.

The hotels are all pretty much booked up right now.

If that's in reference to my Peabody rooftop recommendation, it doesn't matter. You don't have to stay at the Peabody to get to the rooftop party. BTW, hotels in the southeastern burbs (Germantown and Collierville) should have capacity and aren't too bad to get to the stadium (20 min) or downtown (25 min) from...if you don't mind being away from downtown.

Ya, we're out closer to Germantown...

What is the Overton Square area like?

Overton Square's heyday was 30 or so years ago. Far, far more going on in Cooper-Young, music, restaurants, etc., about a mile south of Overton Square.

I don't know what they'll be doing on NYE, but these are two local institutions that are uniquely Memphis--

1. Paula Raiford's Disco (downtown)

http://www.paularaifords.com/raiford_photo/opening_night_photos.htm

2. Wild Bill's if you are into a really authentic blues scene

http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/north-america/united-states/tennessee/memphis/33437/wild-bills/nightlife-detail.html

"Beer sells by the quart, but you'll have to bring your own hard liquor to this gritty urban juke joint that's also as many light-years away from the glitz of Beale Street as you can get. Locals and rhythm-and-blues-loving tourists pack the nondescript room and sit in hard-back chairs at long tables before the band stars cranking out soul and blues classics. The music is hypnotizing, and sweaty patrons -- young and old, black and white -- drink and dance with abandon. If you want an authentic Memphis music experience, check it out."

What cotton said...Overton Square isn't anything I'd recommend anymore.

Ooh!!! Cooper-Young looks like it might be right up our alley!

If you do C-Y (and I love that area), here are a couple suggestions.

1. The food at Cafe Ole is mediocre, at best...but their patio is excellent and sometimes worth bad Tex-Mex. The bacon-wrapped shrimp appetizer is worth it.

2. I love Young Avenue Deli, and I bet they'll have some pretty good live music that night.

3. Don't leave anything out in your car...sorry to sound negative, but there's a lot of crime of opportunity in this neighborhood. Someone can't take advantage of an opportunity that isn't there.

4. The neighborhood to the south can get bad quick. Know your route in and out...and stick to it. You should be fine in any other direction, but minimize the random sightseeing around there unless you're familiar with the area. I'm not trying to frighten anyone...it's a great area, I almost moved there, but it borders an pretty bad area. If you take some simple precautions, it's a great place to hang out.

Appreciate the tips! Those are definitely good things to always remember...we live in Tulsa proper and even in the seemingly quiet areas, always have to be aware and smart.

What is the cab situation like in the area?

forget the square. i would do the cooper young area before the game. the deli or central bbq would do just fine and you are right at the stadium at either of those places.

if you are out towards germantown, there are about a zillion eating/drinking options. if you dont mind being a little more specific we can zero you in.

if you want to be downtown at night, target the south main district. a lot of really good locally owned resturants and bars down there. the link is a start but there is a lot that isnt on there

How is the area around 6141 Old Poplar Pike in east Memphis - The Residence Inn East compared to Germantown Residence Inn? Thanks.

The one in East Memphis is a stone's throw away from the interstate. It's in a nice neighborhood.

There are a bunch of bars/ restaurants that have opened up in downtown since Tulsa was last in the Liberty Bowl. There are places such as Local Gastropub, Aldo's Pizza, Bardog Tavern, The Brass Door, South of Beale, and the new downtown Central BBQ that weren't around in 2005.
