Quote:ODU has hired a consultant to advise the school how to build a new football stadium to replace the 20,118-seat Foreman Field. The stadium should be open in 2019, when the Pirates make their first trip to Norfolk.

Makes me think they are ready to wrap up the study and they are just fine tuning the size, suites, etc..

My guess for how the next few years play out.

They choose the Powhatan site for the stadium.
-Start construction on the new housing that is planned on the East side of Hampton Blvd. Start Summer 16, Open Fall 17

-Once complete, tear down Powhatan and start stadium Start Fall 17

-Then tear down SB Ballard Stadium and start construction on new housing. Start Spring 18, Open Fall 19

-Once that is complete, tear down Webb Center and start building it's replacement, to minimize the amount of construction going on on 49th at the same time. Start Fall 19, Finish Summer 20
How quickly do you think they will have the stadium finished?
Wasn't it in the agreement with the Virginia Tech football series to have the new stadium finished by 2018?

RE: ODU Master Plan - Blue_Trombone - 11-11-2015 06:28 PM

You could also tear down Powhatan during the summer as the new ones are being completed, since that's the low point for student on campus housing.

The original A-H-A agreement doesn't include that clause, but the 8 game agreement (starting in 2022) has it, so we need to have our new stadium by 2022.

Quick comparison, FAU completed their 30,000 seat stadium in roughly one year.

FAU stadium update

FAU stadium update

I was pretty close in my assumption. I figure they will be done roughly that time frame and have it ready before end of spring /start of summer '19 for any potential recruits to do a show and tell.

Then games begin just a few months later.

We'll know more sometime next month hopefully.

In the last article on the stadium from Harry, he said the results would be released in mid-winter. So, I would guess we don't see anything prior to late January/early February.

I guess it slips again!

From what I remember,

Nov-Dec was the initial date for the study to be released.
In the summer, they announced it would be late December at the earliest.

I suppose that is mid-winter.

The new dorm will be named after ODUs first African-American rector, Dr. Hugo Owens;

Sounds like the Beige lot. I hope not. ODU is going to build over all of their tailgate donations.

You are right that looks like the beige lot. I am not sure how they are going to compensate that lost space.

RE: ODU Master Plan - Oduniceguy - 04-26-2016 11:04 PM

Some of my fondest memories from ODU came from the friendships made and the fun times had at the old Hugo Owens Center (a.k.a. "The House") that used to be located on 49th Street. I remember how heart-broken we were upon hearing that it was going to be torn down for new development.

Though I still wish the old structure was in place, I am elated that the university has chosen to honor Dr. Owens in such a grand, yet deserving, fashion.

When they tear down Rogers and Gresham, they're just going to leave grass there. That is going to be used as tailgating space.

A few dorms going there.

There will be a parking ramp just below that, so parking will still exist on that side of the campus (Though I'm sure that was tied to the stadium being relocated)

And the ODAF parking map for you to look at what else changes.

Rogers and Gresham are currently located where the 2 green squares at the Northeast corner of the 2nd map are. And if I read correctly, green on that map means tailgating.

Now, plans could change with the moving of the stadium. I could see some of the parking garages located near the Powhatan site moved east.

RE: ODU Master Plan - monarx - 04-27-2016 08:48 AM

Man, thats a lot of new dorms going up. Why not build taller dorms and save some room for the future? VCU has tower dorms. I think NC State has a few too. Also, interesting that those maps indicate the stadium going where Powhatan is. Lastly, yes, green means tailgating space, but its not real tailgating. Its picnic space a good haul away from the car.

If you look at the number of beds and also square footage. The new dorms will be taller than the existing ones. Maybe not "towers" but at least 5 or 6 stories. I agree towers would get a lot more beds in one building and not take up as much area.

Towers would be ideal but you gotta factor in hurricane resistance and building settling (on a swamp, no less) of a tower. Think the costs would be ever-increasing to insure the same quality of both with each floor added.

And are there height restrictions due to the proximity to the naval base and the airport? That could also be a factor.

While there may be a cost benefit to not going higher, I dont think that hurricane problems and settling are concerns. These are issues that have to be taken into account anyways regardless of size. The factor of safety for design threshold is not crossed with say 8 floors instead of 6. It would the difference of maybe 20-30 floors compared to 6. Then you would have to worry about additional design and engineering challenges and costs. Harnage has already stated that new building would be taller than existing ones. Finally, BAL is 9 floors. Lets just say the tallest dorm they would build would be maybe 10 floors, I cant see anything taller than that. A 10 story building is not even close to affecting any air traffic from the Base or the Norfolk Airport, there may be a height restriction, but its not due to air traffic

RE: ODU Master Plan - Blue_Trombone - 04-27-2016 10:58 AM

I personally want ODU to become akin to a miniature city downtown. Except you have sidewalks instead of roads, and 3x the green space. Building skinnier, taller towers for dorms and academic buildings means you get to keep more square footage for things like green space and gardens.
