With all due respect to the victims, Im a little confused as to why there is a memorial to them on the ODU campus. The attack happened far off campus. I believe a few of the people were alumni, but there have also been several students murdered closer to campus over the years, and many other alumni killed in service to our country. If we are going to honor victims of violence that have a tie to ODU, perhaps a wall with the names of all those folks would make more sense. What am I missing?

“The Alumni Association received an outpouring of love and concern for the victims and their families, and we thought it was only fitting to recognize and honor them in a tangible and long-lasting way,” the spokesperson said when asked what inspired the permanent memorial. “The memorial will be a place of reflection and remembrance.”

Close to half the victims were ODU alumni.

Sad news, Borjo is closing next month.

That is sad. ODU must be the only campus on earth that can't seem to maintain a thriving coffee house, or even a Starbucks. Late night coffees are a staple of college campuses. First Colony, Port City Java, Borjo, even Starbucks... all gone. Maybe something cool will open on Colley down by Hanks and the Wave. Though thats quite a walk from most of the dorms.

This closing has nothing to do with ODU.

Taste bought Borjo a couple years ago and has been adding Borjo coffee bars to select locations. It's closing because Taste doesn't have any interest in operating a location that is not a Taste.

Makes sense I guess. So why don't they open a Taste there? I would think that would go over well with students, faculty and staff. Maybe even some of the locals too. If Borjo was doing well and making a profit, someone will swoop in and fill the void.

Perhaps but then they wouldn't need to announce a closing. They could just transition to that over winter break. Plus there are two nearby locations that are convenient to campus.

I doubt this will stay empty long. They've been doing a good job getting businesses in there. In the meantime, students can get Starbucks coffee in Webb, Einstein's coffee at the library or go to the new Panera that just opened.

I'll miss Borjo. It has been my coffee shop for a long time. Guess it's time to just switch between Yorgos and Fair Grounds?

I don't think taste would do well there. I love taste but it's very expensive. I can't walk out of there with a sandwich in my hand for anything under $12. Plus that location would be too small.

Hopefully it's another coffee shop. I made a nice habit of going there every once in a while to get a coffee and cruise around in the bookstore.

Students have it made these days! Back in my day getting to campus was 24oz cup of 7-11 exclusive blend, 4 sugar packs, 4 shots of French vanilla and three ice cubes.

RE: ODU Master Plan - monarx - 11-06-2019 06:16 PM

I forgot about Panera opening. I bet that played a part in the decision.

I learned about the magic of coffee by drinking it from the 20 oz. styrofoam cups sold at the cafeteria in web center in 1979! That stuff put hair on my chest!

I have had it once while waiting for an order from Cagney's. Pretty good. Just wish the parking situation was better.

Yeah, last I checked they were demolishing a house across the street to turn it into parking for them. Maybe I'll do some research this afternoon and see how it's going

ODU will be renovating 2400 SqFt in Webb Center into a "gaming arena" to help support its' new varsity esports program;
