Slaton

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman running back Steve Slaton was honored by the Walter Camp Football Foundation as its national offensive player of the week.

The Levittown, Pa., resident scored a school and Big East-record-tying six touchdowns – all in the second half – in the Mountaineers’ triple overtime come-from-behind win over Louisville yesterday at Milan Puskar Stadium. Slaton reached the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive week, gaining a season-high 188 yards on 31 carries. Of Slaton’s six touchdowns, five came on runs of four, one, two, 23 and one yard. Slaton also caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Adam Bednarik.

Slaton’s performance helped West Virginia to its second biggest comeback victory ever.

Ohio State’s Bobby Carpenter was named the national defensive player of the week after helping the Buckeyes to a 35-24 win over Michigan State.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers advanced five spots in the USA Today Coaches Poll from 25th to 20th this week.

West Virginia, 6-1, 3-0, travels to South Florida to face the Bulls on Saturday, Oct. 22, in a 7 pm Big East game that will be televised by ESPNU.
