UND moving sports to ACC - EPJr - 09-12-2012 05:14 PM

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick huddled over and over with his staff and tried to play out how the Irish would fill out their 12-game schedule in the years and decades to come, a Notre Dame source said.

Football scheduling issues were Jack Swarbrick's push for the Irish to join the ACC . (AP) That, more than any other factor, led to Wednesday's announcement that Notre Dame would join the ACC in all sports except football, according to the source. The agreement stipulates Notre Dame plays five football games per year against ACC opponents, but not compete for the league title and play eight games, as a full member would. That provides the Irish with the firm scheduling base it coveted while maintaining the freedom to maintain a national schedule.

As for the ACC, the compromise allows its football programs access to a major brand that sells tickets and delivers TV ratings. It will also allow ACC commissioner John Swofford to seek additional compensation from the league's current long-term deal with ESPN, according to an ACC source. That deal has been criticized in league circles for not delivering enough revenue.

The football impact on Notre Dame to the ACC

AD Jack Swarbrick said yesterday that they still intend to play USC and Stanford every year, so that they have at least one game in California. They also will continue to play Navy every year.

Rivalries like the ones with Big Ten schools Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue will likely get squeezed. Swarbrick said that those three may have to go into some kind of rotation.

Even the rivalry with ACC member Boston College will suffer. The ACC portion of the Irish schedule, which will likely begin in 2014, will rotate all 14 ACC teams in a three-year cycle. One ACC opponent will be played twice in that time, but the annual contest with Boston College will no longer be annual.

Purdue expects Notre Dame's ACC move
to have little effect on football series

I wouldn’t expect (Wednesday’s) announcement to affect us,” athletic director Morgan Burke said in a statement released by the university. “We have a longtime relationship with Notre Dame involving many of our programs, and we expect it to continue.”

The schools have an agreement to play annually through 2021, but only the 2013 and 2014 games have signed contracts.

Purdue and Notre Dame have played every season since 1946.

History Lesson:
UND Football vs. ACC Football

[Image: 295157_425140954199308_1189853074_n.jpg]

Let’s look back at Notre Dame’s football history against current and future ACC teams.
•Boston College: 12-9
•Clemson: 1-1
•Duke: 3-1
•Florida State: 2-5
•Georgia Tech: 27-6-1
•Maryland: 2-0
•Miami: 16-7-1
•North Carolina: 16-2
•North Carolina State: 0-1
•Pittsburgh: 46-20-1
•Syracuse: 3-3
•Virginia: 1-0
•Wake Forest: 1-0

In total, the Irish have compiled a 130-55-3 record (.699 winning percentage) in 188 games against this group of teams.

Virginia Tech, one of the conference’s perennial football powerhouses, is the only ACC squad that Notre Dame has never met on the football field. It will be an exciting day, when the Fighting Irish and Hokies finally play – whether in Blacksburg, Va. or right here at Notre Dame.

Problem Solved:
Recommending Notre Dame Football's ACC Schedule Rotation

Notre Dame's going to start playing five ACC football games a year. Great! But how do you divide 14 opponents by five games? Here's a theoretical look at the future of Irish scheduling.

For the ACC as a whole, I can't imagine teams being asked to play nine conference games plus Notre Dame (especially with several of them maintaining tough out-of-conference rivalries) once the Irish come aboard as a ... whatever they are now. More likely: regular games against the Irish count as out-of-division conference games, both for scheduling and for the standings. There, that was easy.

Notre Dame To ACC:
Changes To The ACC Men's Basketball Tournament Format

With Pittsburgh and Syracuse set to join the conference next season, the ACC was already anticipating a move to a five-day format for the ACC men's basketball tournament. Though Notre Dame makes it 15 programs, an odd number, don't expect the new format of the conference tournament to change much.

Commissioner John Swofford thinks that this new format will remain largely the same after Notre Dame joins, with three games being played on Wednesday and the top-four seeds continuing to receive early-round byes. The dreaded double-bye? Oh yes, the double-bye.

Notre Dame wants to maintain Big East Conference rivalries
[Image: 600]

Notre Dame is expecting to play in the Big East the next two seasons, but whenever the Fighting Irish do join the ACC, coach Mike Brey is ready to completely change his nonconference schedule.

Brey wants to play the Big East's Catholic-based institutions, especially long-standing rivals Marquette and DePaul, in nonconference home-and-home series. Brey said he would like to add Villanova, St. John's and possibly Georgetown into the rotation of schools the Irish want to play. Brey said he wants to play at least two to three of those five schools every season.

"We're not in Philadelphia anymore so we definitely want Villanova, we want to go to New York with St. John's and keep DePaul and Marquette," Brey said. "We will be in the D.C. area with Maryland, but we'd still like to play Georgetown. Villanova, DePaul, Marquette, St. John's and possibly Georgetown are definitely the five I'd like to do."

Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Notre Dame will continue to play Navy, which bailed out the school in the 1940s when it was struggling financially by putting programs on the South Bend campus. The Irish also will keep playing Southern California and Stanford, to keep a presence on the West Coast.

Notre Dame's McGraw expects UConn rivalry to continue
[Image: connecticut_at_notre_dame_womens_basketball.jpg]

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Though the Big East has been good to her program, Muffet McGraw is fine with leaving it behind.

But powerhouse Connecticut? The Notre Dame women's basketball coach has no intention of letting that rivalry die.

Even as her program begins a new life in the ACC at some point, McGraw confirmed Wednesday that she will approach Huskies coach Geno Auriemma about continuing that series in non-conference play.

The Fighting Irish notified the Wolverines that they are exercising a three-year out in their series contract, meaning the last meeting between the historic rivals will occur in 2014.

Through a Freedom of Information Act request, The Associated Press obtained a letter Tuesday from Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick to Michigan AD David Brandon, canceling the games from 2015 to 2017.

Shamrock Series bridges past and future and will continue
[Image: ncf_a_nd-uniform_mb_400.jpg]
Different venue, very different uniforms -- but a familiar foe nonetheless

No. 9 Notre Dame's 25th meeting Saturday with Miami will put a new twist on one of the sport's most intense rivalries, as it's the fourth installment of the Irish's "Shamrock Series" -- when the school takes one home game to a major city and presents a taste of 21st-century life to a historic program.

Soldier Field is the venue of choice for the Irish this season, following the Alamodome, Yankee Stadium and FedEx Field. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said at the team's preseason media day Aug. 16 that the annual off-site home game is in the cards through at least the 2016 season, with sites but not opponents nailed down. Next year's will feature Arizona State at Cowboys Stadium.

ACC decides to keep 8-game conference schedule for football

As a partial ACC member, Notre Dame will play five football games a year against ACC teams, while retaining as much of their traditional independent rivalries as possible. Per the exit policies for the Big East, the conference Notre Dame houses the rest of its sports, the Fighting Irish wouldn't be eligible to begin competition in the ACC until 2015. If a $5 million buyout is paid to the Big East before that time, though, Notre Dame can make the switch at any time.

Many believe the buyout could be paid before next school year.

FSU keeps partnerships with Clemson and Miami. The Hurricanes will use FSU and Virginia Tech as their primary partners. Two meetings per season -- one at home and one away -- with the teams in those partnerships will be guaranteed. The rest of the 14 non-conference games -- the ACC announced earlier this year it will be moving next year from a 16-game conference schedule to 18 games -- will feature home and away games with two rotating opponents, and five home-only games and and five road-only games. The current primary crossover partners will remain consistent with Syracuse and Pitt becoming primary crossover partners with each other.

Atlantic Division
Boston College Eagles
Clemson Tigers
Florida St. Seminoles
Maryland Terrapins
N.C. State Wolfpack
Syracuse Orange
Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Coastal Division
Duke Blue Devils
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Miami Hurricanes
North Carolina Tar Heels
Pittsburgh Panthers
Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia Tech Hokies

New ACC schedule format partners for BC, Notre Dame, and Syracuse
[Image: LA1236K-c.jpg]

Men's and Women's Basketball
The ACC will continue to play an 18-game conference schedule with the addition of Notre Dame. The scheduling model will be based on a two-partner format.

Each year, teams will play every league opponent at least once with the two partners playing home and away annually. In addition to the four annual games against partners, the remaining 14 conference games will feature home and away games with two rotating opponents and five home-only games and five road-only games.

The two-primary-partner format preserves competitive balance and builds upon traditional rivalries while providing the opportunity to create new ones.

Boston College - Notre Dame and Syracuse
Clemson - Florida State and Georgia Tech
Duke - North Carolina and Wake Forest
Florida State - Clemson and Miami
Georgia Tech - Clemson and Notre Dame
Maryland - Pitt and Virginia
Miami - Florida State and Virginia Tech
North Carolina - Duke and NC State
NC State - North Carolina and Wake Forest
Notre Dame - Boston College and Georgia Tech
Pitt - Maryland and Syracuse
Syracuse - Boston College and Pitt
Virginia - Maryland and Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech - Miami and Virginia
Wake Forest - Duke and NC State

Following the regular season, the ACC Tournament format will continue to feature all league members. The Tournament will begin with three games on Wednesday, followed by four games on Thursday and Friday, two semifinals on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday. The top four seeds will continue to receive byes into Friday's quarterfinal round.

In the annual ACC/B1G Challenge, the decision was made to include the 12 teams with the best RPI from the previous year.

The ACC Baseball Tournament returns to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C., for the third time in five seasons. In 2009 and 2011 The 2013 tournament will be held May 22-26. The conference announced a change that will feature only 10 teams in a six-day, double-elimination tournament at season's end. Two single-elimination games on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday will round out that tournament.

Big East schism muddies Irish move to ACC
[Image: Presentation132_opt1.jpg]

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame's athletic director says the recently announced split between the Big East and seven schools that don't play major college football could complicate the Fighting Irish's exit from the conference.

"Those two parties have to divide assets," Jack Swarbrick told reporters Monday. "It poses a question about who you're even talking to. Who is the Big East? Which of the two sides of that has the Big East name and rights, and who might lay claim to the Notre Dame affiliation going forward? It's an interesting dynamic to try and figure out where all that's headed. One of the real challenges we have right now is trying to assess when that might settle out."

Notre Dame, Big East reach deal;
Irish to join ACC in July

Notre Dame and the Big East reached an agreement Tuesday morning that allows the Irish to leave the league on July 1, 2013.

This paves the way for their expedited move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, where they will begin competing this fall.

"Notre Dame now looks forward with great anticipation to becoming a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference," Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. "We are thrilled to join a great group of institutions who share our commitment to the integration of athletics into the academic mission of the university. Our coaches and student-athletes across our athletic programs are truly excited about the new challenges ahead."

Notre Dame is coming to the ACC early;
football arrangement still won't start until 2014

[Image: 1041122047001_2221424843001_3-12-ACC-NOW-THUMB.jpg]

Notre Dame will become an official partial member of the ACC on July 1 this year after coming to an agreement to leave the fractured Big East. The decision was described by the league as "amicable."

That means the ACC will welcome Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame this year, making it a 15-team league for most sports.

ACC commissioner John Swofford released this statement about today's news:

“Our conference, schools and fans are delighted that Notre Dame will join the ACC on July 1, 2013. The addition of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, followed by Louisville in 2014, positions us extremely well with an outstanding collection of 15 member institutions.

“As was previously announced, our annual five games against Notre Dame in football will begin with the 2014 season. This not only will enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement.

Clarifying Notre Dame's ACC football arrangement
[Image: notre-dame-helmet-statue.jpg]

Big news now that Notre Dame's move to the ACC will take place on July 1, but this will have little impact on football this fall. Since I've been getting plenty of questions about it, here's a quick refresher course for what this means on the gridiron:
