Big East Image: NBE School profiles - SMUfrat - 08-30-2012 05:29 PM

With the NBE still a fresh concept, I think we need to start thinking about what our image is going to be.

To start: I am wondering what all y'alls schools look like. I know SMU is a BEAUTIFUL Southern campus where its filled with trees, etc.

I think it would be cool to list some of our school's attributes and mentionables here. Pictures would be awesome too! Ill do one for SMU.

SMU:
- 300 acres of parklike, southern landscape
- almost like a green paradise on the edge of urban Dallas and Suburbia (park cities)
- Georgian (red brick) architecture throughout campus, everything fits
- Tree lined drives, huge oak trees
- Many 'quads' that focus around academic schools
- George W. Bush Presidential Library Comples
- GWB Complex is on campus and has a 20 acre park with water features
- Fraternity and sorority houses
- On campus stadium
- top 50 in academics
- GREAT socially and universally beautiful. Y'all will love visiting!

I'd post pics if I wasnt at work

Please do a profile for your school.

RE: Big East Image: NBE School profiles - UConn-SMU - 08-30-2012 06:35 PM

* Founded in 1881, UConn is set on 4,100+ rural acres in the hills and trees of southern New England. The campus is in the top 5 in the country in terms of size.
* UConn is a land and sea grant school.
* It is 30 minutes to Hartford, 90 minutes to Boston, and 2 1/2 hours to NYC.
* The architecture on campus is eclectic ... there are buildings from the 1940's and many buildings built in the last 10 years, including the state-of-the-art School of Business. There are too many recent improvements to list.
* There's a BB stadium on campus, but many games are played in the larger arena in Hartford. There are also baseball, soccer, and hockey stadiums on campus.
* Originally an agricultural school, UConn's ag program is still strong and the dairy bar sells the best ice cream in the nation.
* UConn is a "Public Ivy", ranked #58 in U.S. News (the #19 public school).
* National championships in men's BB (3), women's BB (7), and men's soccer (3).

Oh, I should've added that Temple is regarded as one of the most diverse schools in the country and it is true

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey

New Brunswick
* Colonial college, chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church
* Renamed after Col. Henry Rutgers in 1825
* 5 campuses in the New Brunswick/Piscataway area, each has a distinctive flavor, College Ave Campus part of the city of New Brunswick, Douglass Campus the former College for Women, Cook the Land-Grant campus, etc.
* Roughly midway between New York and Philadelphia
* Designated as the State University of NJ in 1945, it was a private school before that. Our history is unique among State Universities!
* Joined the AAU in 1989

As far as our football history, our rivals for the longest time were Princeton, Lehigh and Lafayette. Among Big East schools, our long-time opponents include Temple, Navy and Connecticut. We played primarily a 1AA schedule of local schools before deciding to go "bigger-time" during the 70s, phasing out the Princetons and Lehighs off the schedule and playing the traditional Lambert schools. Undefeated seasons in 1961 and 1976 (along with an undefeated, Final Four basketball team in 1976 -- that was a great year On the Banks), and a #17 final ranking in 1976 in football.

Georgetown University:

--Oldest continuous university in the Big East (1789; Rutgers dates to 1766 but closed twice in the 1800's.). Georgetown predates the founding of Washington DC and its school seal notes it as located in Maryland.
--Oldest Catholic university in the US but the one with the smallest percentage of Catholic students (just 41%).
--Admissions competitive; accepted only 16% of applicants in 2012. #22 in US News rankings.
--104 acre campus along the Potomac River in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, mostly built in the 18th Century. (The streets remain friendlier to the 18th Century than the 21st.)
--Only private school in the BE to sponsor a law and a medical school.
--Over 80% of students live on campus, which is certainly cheaper than living off-campus, where the median home price is $987,000.
--Twelve current or former heads of state are among its living alumni.
--Football and soccer play on campus, but most sports are off-campus due to space considerations.
--No fraternities or sororities but with all DC has to offer, they are not particularly missed.
--First sports team dates to 1798, with baseball in 1870, football in 1874, and basketball relatively young by comparison (1907).

I don't think we're top 50 in academics, close though.

McKay's not a great person to list because he transferred to Penn State. How about one of the most well known DJs and producers in the world, Diplo?!? Diplo transferred to Temple from UCF. He was featured in a Blackberry Torch commercial.

You forgot to mention that Temple has campuses in suburban Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Rome Italy and Tokyo Japan. Temple is also one of the top 3 producers of professionals (Law, Medicine, etc.). The main campus is undergoing a $2 billion renovation .... sick!!!

- Founded in 1819, UC has an annual enrollment of over 42K students making it the second largest university in Ohio.
- The university garners over $500 million per annum in research funding, ranking 22nd among public universities in the country. The Chronicle of Higher Education named UC as a “Research Heavyweight”.
- Numerous nationally ranked programs including aerospace enginnering, anthropology, architecture, classics, cooperative education, criminal justice, design, law, medicine, music, musical theatre, neurology, opera, otolaryngology, paleontology, pediatrics and pharmacy.
- Campus is located uptown. UC was honored by Forbes as one of “The World’s Most Beautiful College Campuses”.
- UC was the originator of the co-operative (co-op) model. The concept was invented at UC in 1906.
- The university has had four individual and six team national championships in athletics. Notable athletic alums include Sandy Koufax, Miller Huggins and Kevin Youkilis (baseball), Osacar Robertson, Jack Twyman, Kenyon Martin, Danny Fortson, Nick Van Exel (basketball) and Urban Meyer, Jim O’Brien, Trent Cole, Brent Celek, Connor Barwin, and Haruki Nakamura (football).
- The Bearcat became UC mascot in 1914 during a game against the Kentucky. UC’s star player was Leonard “Teddy” Baehr. A cheer was adopted “They maybe Wildcats, but we have a Baehr-cat on our side” and “Come on, Baehr-cat!”
- Cincinnati’s oldest football rivalry against Miami University began in 1888. Miami University is located 40 miles northwest of Cincinnati. The teams play for the Victory Bell. It is the oldest college football rivalry west of the Allegheny Mounains and is the third oldest rivalry in college football.
- Cincinnati and Louisville battle for the Keg of Nails annually. The rivalry dates back to 1929.
- In basketball the Bearcats play crosstown rival Xavier University. Xavier is located less than 3 miles from UC’s campus.

Two cheers you will need to get used to if/when you attend a UC sporting event. The first is Down the Drive. You may have heard it on TV (Opponents ask what we are doing when they hear the chant “Oooh, Oooh, Ooh, clap, clap, clap, clap----- UC! (Fans Form the letter U and the letter C with their arms). The second cheer you will frequently hear is Cheer Cincinnati. Here are the words:

Cheer Cincy
Cheer Cincinnati, Cincy will win
Fight to the finish, never give in (Rah, Rah, Rah)
You do your best boys, we'll do the rest boys,
Onward to victory!
Go Red, Go Black, Go Bearcats! Fight! Fight! Fight!
(Give me a) B-E-A-R-C-A-T-S Go UC!

RE: Big East Image: NBE School profiles - SMUfrat - 08-31-2012 09:08 AM

nice posts. I love learning about everyone's universities.

SDSU looks beautiful. I have been to Georgetown - great area, but 100 acres seems too small... buy up some land around it and build some stuff (I know yall are pretty much locked in)

If Uconn is a public ivy, who else is? Rutgers?

SMU is apart of the 'magnolia league' which means southern ivy haha

I didnt realize Temple's campus was so big. Glad it isnt a commuter school anymore. I know U-Houston and U-Louisville are both trying to drop their 'commuter school' status. Good direction in my opinion.
