Pretty sure a guy by the name of Travis Epps is joining the team as a 2015 preferred walk-on... Seems to be on campus with the rest of the guys based on twitter. This is about all I could find: https://future150.com/hs/basketball-profiles/travis-epps-pg-2015

RE: Rhoades Recruiting - ExcitedOwl18 - 06-22-2015 10:25 PM

Also, this guy seems seems to be another preferred walk-on: http://www.twcnews.com/tx/austin/sports/2015/03/9/mccallum-senior-has-brawn-and-brain.html (Yes, in the article it says differently, but my info is based off twitter).

Glad those guys are getting a look and that we're filling out our roster while preserving our scholarships for any more signees in the class of 2016.

So are they all on campus now? Is there a date set for the second SEAL camp?

Not recruiting-specific, but this website has a pdf describing Coach Rhoades goals, priorities, etc. for his first 100 days at Rice.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting - mrbig - 07-29-2015 03:14 PM

Noticed that the official roster has been updated and reflects one freshman walk-on, 6'4" G/F http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/harrison_brown_975570.html from Virginia. Did a little digging and it looks like he originally committed to DIII Dickinson College.

Strangely, I could not find any articles linking him to Rice or saying that he was not going to Dickinson College. His twitter bio still reflects him going to Dickinson and I didn't see any posts on Twitter saying anything about Houston or Rice.

Other item of note is that Van Green and Austin Ramljak are both listed as Graduate Assistants!

Edit: sorry, I didn't my notice this had been covered in the other thread.

Wonder if he's related to Fawn Leibowitz?

I wonder if he a walk-on since he only got a scholarship form a DIII college.

DIII schools don't give out athletic scholarships.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting - OldOwl - 08-03-2015 11:19 PM

Yes, I forgot about DIII not having athletic scholarships.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting - mrbig - 08-25-2015 12:31 PM

Not really news, but Rivals came out with an update Top 150 list. Rice commit Josh Hall comes in at #95 nationally, and he is #120 on the 247sports list. No surprise, we already knew he was generally regarded as an elite high school player.

Other players holding Rice offers that are not committed elsewhere and are ranked in the top 150 nationally by either Rivals or 247sports (in parenthesis):
#33 (#28) Tony Bradley (PF)
#40 (#39) Javin DeLaurier (PF)
#80 (#69) Kevin Huerter (SG)
#85 (#76) Taurean Thompson (PF)
#148 (UR) Tim Harrison (PF) - VerbalCommits shows this offer, but not Rivals
UR (#115) John Fulkerson (PF) - VerbalCommits shows offer
UR (#136) Grant Williams (SF) - VerbalCommits shows offer

Of course, I have no idea if any of those guys are remotely interested in Rice, they obviously have lots of offers from prominent basketball programs. Still, nice to see Rice making offers to some of the elite national players. To the contrary, glancing at the profile pages for some of these guys on some of the recruiting websites, I don't see that any of them mention Rice being one of their top choices or scheduling an official or unofficial visit.

Pretty OT, but I was watching the old documentary Hoop Dreams last night and was very surprised to hear "Rice" as one of the schools recruiting an elite player out of Illinois. @ 14:44 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSPOfjCzQaA

Not new news-- he's already matriculated and has been on campus all Summer.

Walt ... the documentary was from 1994 - any recruits from the film have likely lost a step or two.

everybody was VERY QUICK to dismiss my criticisms of our soft non-con schedule for 15-16.

does anyone out there believe that scheduling eventually [/align]will need to improve in order to sustain our apparent recruiting momentum?

If you listen to JK's podcast, he says that the non conference scheduling will improve once our RPI gets out of the 200's and into the low 100's. Until then, it's hard to get anyone good to play us because we ruin their SOS and there's a chance we might actually win. So if we keep improving this year then schedule will hopefully improve.

His entire comments about scheduling for MBB and FB were very interesting and I fully support his views.

RPI and SOS is important in baseball and basketball... not as much in football.... at least for our current situation.

That makes a lot of sense. But, yes, MemOwl ... I, for one, did take your criticism to heart. I just didn't submit a "metoo" post...
