As long as they are building this Chessick center from ground up, did they consider putting in an indoor track that could host events to make up for the failed attempt when they did the Convo?
Not sure what happened when they did the convo with that, did they get the dimensions wrong or something?

Indoor meets would help raise money for NIU. Could host high school or club events as well. Good for income and recruiting.

The CPC track has four lanes, which I believe is acceptable for an indoor track. But, the curves are WAY too tight. Widening the curves would have made a longer and wider building. It would have really changed the footprint. What might be able to be done is using the corners of the football field for the curves. That's what Toledo does with the Fetterman Center.
As far as the Convo, that was a complete fail by the individual that approves capital projects.

I am told the footprint would not allow a full track and thats OK because theis is primarily a football facility with room for the other minor sports. They can do what Toledo does, thats good enugh. Track just isn't a big deal

A full track would overlap with Douglas, the tennis courts and the two parking lots.
The other route they could have gone is to shorten the track by cutting the corners off the football field but do we really want that...I don't.

Cutting off the corners of the football facility is not needed. You just need lanes striped that overlap the football field.

NCAA regulations require a minimum length of 200 meters for an indoor track. Six lanes are required; curves do not have to be banked.

Convo is a nice facility, other than the track I truely believe they got it right. Just bigger than we probably need for now. Stopped by the garage sale Saturday and was checking it out. The track is worthless but the rest of the facility is nice. If we ever got into hockey you could put a rink in there easy.

What I should have said was that not having a regulation indoor track in the Convo was a complete fail. From what I've been told, it just a few yards too short to be regulation. Could have easily been done.

If you put an indoor track there, you can host MAC Indoor Championships. There are only five schools that can host the indoor championships (BG, EMU, KSU, CMU, and UA). That would bring in money to the area for hotels and restaurants because you would be looking at over 500 athletes and fans (yes, EMU fans will drive to the conference championships) coming to the event.

I would take this facility in a heartbeat! But, given that we haven't had any indoor facility prior, I'm glad we will at least have the nice new facility that we will have. And I'm thankful for all those who have stepped up to make it happen. That doesn't keep me from wishing it could be bigger and better to have a legit track in it.

So here is a question: What happens if the donations really step up over the next few months and we exceed 9.5 mil? Do we get a bigger and better facility? What happens if get like 11 mil?

I don't want to see anything track go into the IPF. If they 4 lanes around it fine, but track especially in the Northern states is pretty much irrelevant. If we did not need track due to title IX, i would rather see the money go to the women's sports that actually mean something.

Women's track was having some nice success this year. Not sure how they have been doing lately. They might be an "up and coming" program in the conference and midwest. What women's sports "mean something" - basketball and volleyball?
Track in the Northern states is not really irrelevant in my opinion. Some might say that track in general is irrelevant, but many schools have nice indoor facilities that allow them to compete nationally. There is nothing wrong with having a women's track team and I'd LOVE to see a showcase facility like Akron's to support both indoor football and track needs.

The goal for most of the sports should be to win MAC championships. Anything on the national stage after that is just extra.

Just some background info on track in Illinois. My daughter runs high school track in Naperville, and there are several nationally elite track athletes (male and female) in the state. Several high schools have indoor tracks for competition in February and March, but the best are at North Central College and Illinois Wesleyan. The track at North Central will be hosting the Division III indoor track and field championships, and Illinois Wesleyan annualy hosts the IPTT invite, which is the de facto high school indoor track and field championships. The latter event attracts about 300-400 athletes from across the state. Track and field may not be a high profile sport at the college level, but on the prep side, the competition in Illinois is amongst the best in the nation.
