Vibrations brought down NK rocket - DrTorch - 04-17-2012 07:32 AM

So says the speculation

http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4370955/Severe-vibrations-likely-brought-down-N--Korean-rocket

Quote:He said the timing of the failure at about 60 seconds into the flight points to severe vibration at Max Q, the point where aerodynamic stresses on rocket traveling through the atmosphere are greatest. Unlike American rockets, the North Koreans lack the ability to throttle their liquid-fueled rockets up or down to diminished the stresses at Max Q.

Why?

No, why can't they throttle their motors?

Never has this song been so true

I don't know what kind of fuel they are using in their rockets, however if it is a solid fuel there is no throttle, just light and go, like the solid boosters for the space shuttle. I would assume they are liquid fuel, which we have been throttling since the 1960's. Just goes to show that the NK's are idiots.

Vibrating rockets?

RE: Vibrations brought down NK rocket - No Bull - 04-17-2012 10:12 AM

pretty interesting.... makes one wonder...

Trying to do it on the cheap... The tech is not very new but to properly implement it requires key tools that are (1) not cheap and (2) not easy for an nation under an international microscope to obtain.

You heard it hear first - lasers. American lasers.

Au contrair, my fine feathered friend. Do you think they'd tell us they lasers were operational? The stealth planes were operating years before they were public....

Good question. This paper gives some good information (and the links provide even more detail).

This link provides the following info: Taep'o-Dong-2 (TD-2) Design Evolution, Shahab-5, A,B, C/6

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/dprk/td-2-specs.htm Wrote:Step-throttle thrust levels Step-1 (kgf) Step-2 (kgf)

Although step-throttling was used by North Korea for the TD-1 attempted satellite launch that both stretched the range and the altitude in addition to achieving the required velocity it is not believed to have been designed into the TD-2 hardware.

Many Bothans died to bring us this picture of the Taep'o-Dong-2 fueling on the launchpad.

don't know who caused the nork rocket to fail (have a hunch japan or israel was involved) but anyway, many thanks on a job well done

Not necessarily. It's tough stuff, w/ many more things that can go wrong rather than right. It really is rocket science.

This is what happens when something isn't built by highly trained and skilled union workers.
